I attended a Terrarium workshop recently and was quite happy with the Terrarium I came away with. This was the first Terrarium I have made.

They offered these little trees and I jumped at the offer because they looked neat. But I've noticed its roots have been growing really quickly – this has happend in the space of about 2-3 weeks. Is this going to harm the rest of the plants? Is it going to outgrow the terrarium? What can I do? (Sorry for the bad pics, the tree itself is tucked away quite well)

Also any other beginner tips would be great. Does it look like this terrarium might survive sealed or is it doomed?

The folks in the shop said not to worry about leaves touching the side, and that a sealed terrarium doesn't need insects in to survive – but that is contrary to what I've read elsewhere… so I'm doubting their advice at this point (including them saying it was fine to include this tree).

  1. No, I wouldn’t worry, honestly roots like that are great to see in a new terrarium. You might want to keep the tree trimmed, it looks like a kind used for Bonsai sometimes(Ginseng Ficus maybe?)

Looks great! I would add springtails, they’ll take care of any mold/leaf decay and keep the soil from compacting too much over time. All mine are sealed with springtails and only need trimming once every 4-5 months to keep the composition. Some I don’t touch for up to a year- but at that time it’s a pretty big undertaking to spruce it up back to a picturesque setting.
