DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – June is here and our very short growing season has started.

Gardeners need to make the most of it and that includes those at the farmers markets, who say it is going to be a pretty good year on all counts.

The hordes of apple blossoms fluttering from the trees from Bayfield to Buhl are a sign that fruit crops will do well this summer.

“We are on the alternate year bearing upswing because last year there was almost nothing and lots and lots of people were bereft of apples,” said Botanist Deb Shubat.

Shubat says in her words that we’ll have billions to jillions of apples.

Vegetables should do well as well.

Lois Hoffbauer, a worker at Farmer Doug’s, tells us warm weather is the key to success and she hopes her favorite cash crop cashes in on that.

“Personally, I hope it is pumpkins but everything should grow, everything is going to grow and it is going to be a great year,” said Hoffbauer.

It’s already been a great year for Northland beekeepers.

Vanessa Roers and her dad Mark Walters run Miel Honey.

Cold spring weather can ruin an entire hive and a beekeeper’s whole year.

“There were no freezes where we did have some cooler nights where my dad got a little concerned but after a brief check they’re doing pretty good,” said Roers.

If it is a good season for pollinators, it’ll be an even better season for fruits and vegetables.
