OSCODA – Robert J. Parks Library on Skeel Ave. hosted a Community Garden Party on Saturday, June 7.
The event introduced the community to the raised bed community garden that was recently planted in front of the library.
The garden is a joint venture between the library and MSU Extension. Together they applied for a SNAP-Ed mini grant for $1,500 according to Danielle Jirasek, community nutrition instructor with MSU Extension.
The event included face painting, food sampling, a scavenger hunt, arts and crafts projects and seed planting for children. Volunteers from Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union (AAACU) assisted with the event.
The raised beds include a variety of lettuces, tomatoes, herbs, peppers, celery, peas, cucumbers, kale, beets and cauliflower. A separate pot has strawberry plants in it.
Library staff and members of the Downtown Beautification Committee (DBC) will be tending to the garden.
The event wrapped up with an unveiling of the garden, seed planting, produce and voucher giveaways.
