Location: Lake Waccamaw, NC. I was out here taking photos of these trees for an upcoming publication. I found some extremely unusual pond cypresses exhibiting styles you never see, but this was the only one that could itself also be a bonsai.

Also, believe it or not, that’s not a knee. As I’ve seen over and over out here, these trees on this lake–technically a Carolina Bay–get battered like crazy, and their roots get whittled away. So what looks like a knee actually used to be part of the profile of the tree.

Apparently pond cypress don’t produce knees as often (or ever?) like bald cypress.

Bald cypress were all along the edges but the only trees actually out in the water like this were pond cypress.

I know nothing about bald cypress other than what Ive seen on the ole internet, but that’s a great looking tree. Thanks for sharing. And also thanks for not be selfish and trying to rip it up and bring home without permission — pet peeve of mine.

The Spanish moss is just the chef’s kiss on this natural bonsai. We can only hope to match it.

  4. Thank you for not ripping it up 🙏 beautiful specimen that deserves to keep living in its home

  5. Giving the location is begging for somebody to come poach it
