Guns to Gardens destroys firearms and repurposes them into garden tools

MADISON (WKOW) — As part of the “Wear Orange Weekend” campaign, people in the Madison community had the opportunity to safely dispose of their unwanted firearms and turn them into garden tools.

Retired Lutheran Pastor and blacksmith Jeff Wild was at First United Methodist Church collecting unwanted firearms from people across the city.

Organizers say the goal is to turn the firearms into symbols of growth and hope.

Wild says events like Saturday’s are important to preventing gun violence.

The firearms are destroyed on site. They’re cut according to the firearm, tobacco and alcohol guidelines, and we then transform them into garden tools, such as a small pickaxe, also known as a mattok and also a handheld spade,” Wild said.

Those who turned in their firearms received gift cards as a reward
