As we head into the first month of summer and temperatures begin to climb, many of us are eager to soak up the sun and enjoy weekend barbecues in the garden. However, experts are urging homeowners to exercise caution, especially if your garden features artificial grass.
While synthetic turf offers a lush, low-maintenance alternative to natural grass, it also comes with some fire-related risks that are easy to overlook. In one quick moment, a dropped hot coal or a stray spark from the barbecue can quickly lead to some costly damage. Even though some types of artificial grass are made from flame-retardant materials, this doesn’t mean that they are not completely fireproof.
While the turf may not burst into flames, the heat can still cause it to melt, warp, or release toxic fumes, potentially ruining your expensive lawn and putting your home or garden at risk.
James Higgins, a gardening expert from Grass247, said: “Having a BBQ in the sun is an essential activity for many Brits, but we understand the concerns you may have for your artificial turf.
“As long as you take the necessary safety measures, and take into account the type of barbecue you are using, it’s absolutely okay to have a barbecue on artificial grass.”
He added: “It’s recommended to use a metal standing barbecue on your fake grass, as this is raised and should stop any flames or heat from damaging the materials.”
Instead of placing the barbecue directly on the articifial grass, set it up on a patio or decking area at a safe distance.
James recommended using a metal standing barbecue, as it’s elevated and prevents heat or flames from directly touching the artificial turf.
Disposable barbecues are not off-limits, but never place them directly on the grass. Instead, set them on a raised, heat-resistant platform such as a metal table, bricks, or stones to protect the turf underneath.
If you must place a barbecue near the grass, ensure it’s elevated and that no heat or hot materials can come into contact with the grass.
Be mindful of dropped hot food or burning materials and make sure to clean these up immediately if they come in contact with the artifical grass to avoid any staining, melting, or further damage.
