zone 6a – virginia spiderwort
I first noticed and admired it in my neighbors garden in 2023 (2nd pic) and two years later, they lovingly offered me a heap of it to begin my own garden! πŸͺ they said if I ever want anything from their garden to just ask ❀️

Oh good picture! That’s a little hoveryfly! Not a bee, but arguably just as important insects πŸ™‚

  2. I just got some of this from my mom’s yard! So exciting to receive plants!

Just a heads up – virginia spiderwort is very pretty (and it’s native to the eastern US), but it is a pretty annoying plant to deal with. It spreads like crazy, and it creates these very thick tuber-like roots under the soil that can choke out your other plants. The roots make it near-impossible to dig out and remove if you change your mind, too. That could be a good thing – it’s basically one of the few native plants that can outcompete invasive weeds. If you like it, go for it, but if you’re not familiar I would do some research first before you plant the spiderwort in your garden.

My spiderwort feels old looking at this. Lol. When I was in high school one of my friends mom dug up a chunk of hers and gave it to me. It blew up as expected and grew all along the side of my dad’s house for years. Through various moves and life, I still have a bit of it and soon it will be allowed to spread freely. (I’m 41 πŸ€“)

I think you have both a hoverfly AND a tiny bee! It looks like you have a little bee on the rear flower. Maybe a small carpenter bee (Ceratina sp) but that’s just a guess!

  6. yeah I saw one a few days ago around my newly planted native patch and around my mulch. It’s probably thinking “I’ll have to come back here later, lol”
