It’s currently the end of autumn, the mornings are finally starting to feel cooler, but we still haven’t had much rain….not since last year before the summer, so the garden is just hanging in there. Today, I want to share an update on my urban food forest progress and the wide range of fruit I’m growing in a small space!

My garden is high-density with over 200 types of fruit trees, plus herbs and annual veggies, with my property being less than 1/5 of an acre in total. My goal is to have small amounts of many different types of fruit and be able to harvest fruit 365 days a year. This means I’ve said goodbye to spacing rules, utilised dwarf fruit trees, vertical gardening, learnt to multi-graft, and I keep my trees pruned to not only let light in but also create more green material to chop and drop and feed my soil.

  1. Welcome back to my garden! What have you been harvesting lately? Let me know πŸ‘‡also sending dry weather vibes to our friends on the East coast that are struggling with all the rain😣

  2. Beautiful work, Holly! Very inspiring. And glad to see the rain has come back to Perth over the last couple days, can only hope it stays a little while!
A bit of a random question for you: Have you noticed any difference in the presence of certain insects/ potential pests with the arrival of frogs in your pond?

  3. Beautiful garden Holly. I like the idea of chop and drop to allow more sunlight and makes mulch on the same time. I’m also doing high density backyard gardening in Sydney. I harvested last produce is pomegranate which was super sweet 😊

  4. Apparently (Dr Google) says it's a Golden Orb Weaver (Trichonephilia Edulis). They prey on insects, and not harmful to humans. I'm also very interested if you do consultations? I'm in Perth Hills.

  5. It’s so nice to see a video from you Holly. Some of my garden too has been suffering with no rain in Perth. It looks happier today after heavy rain. My 3 avocado trees and single mango tree are growing in beautifully! I can’t wait to see a giant avocado from your tree!

  6. Thanks for another great video Holly. I'm pretty sure that's a golden orb spider. We've had a couple beofre. Their webs get to be huge & their backs swell up & look really scary but they are harmless so we assumed they are beneficial πŸ˜‰

  7. Im also in sandy old Perth. Do you have any guides on setting up the soil for success? Can we fix the soil we have or is it better to just give up and get a truck load brought in from somewhere else? Have done a lot of research about adding clays etc but a lot of it conflicts. Just seeing if you had a video or a guide on this

  8. I think your spider is a Golden Orb. Have you thought of growing any berries? Interested to know whether you have had any luck?

  9. Hi Holly, any tips to get Feijoas fruiting? They've been in for I think about 4 years!

  10. Thank you for not hurting the spider. Gorgeous golden orb weaver. We have them everywhere πŸ’• I love your garden. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  11. Hi Holly, Great to see what you're doing in your garden. Fingers crossed autumn/winter has arrived after this weekend. You have a golden orb spider. They are amazing spiders that make huge intricate webs. They will catch surplus insects in their webs, but are also part of the food chain with some small birds etc. Our garden has become a haven for them over the years and we love having them.

  12. After 5 months of summer it is about the weather is about too turn and hit here in Adelaide!! Hopefully we get something!! LOL!!

  13. Garden looks greatπŸŽ‰
I will.have to try growing trees from seeds ..sure will be a challenge πŸ™

  14. Here is TAS it is much colder than Perth, my last havest was the remaining jalapenos on my plant before first frost. Now I'm waiting on my autumn/winter seeds to get going, i was a bit late planting but I'll hopefully have some spinach coming in soon.

  15. How do you plan where you plant and keep up with the different gardening schedules of all your different plants?

  16. Hey Holly! Where do you get you dwarf fruit trees from? I am trimming back my food forest to get more light in and I am looking for more dwarf fruit trees. I have a Super Dwarf Banana and recently purchased a black sapote (not a dwarf but is a sapling at the moment. As far as flowers go, I have planted Hellebores which I haven't grown before but they are known as the winter rose and of the three different colors, one of them is black. I planted this as understory to a curry leaf plant (I make a lot of curries and can't keep up with the growth), a white azalea and a giant pink camellia in a south facing bed which at the moment gets a lot of shade. Cheers!
