Little late for the first mow after seed. What do I do?
The problem was I seeded once, then seeded again a couple weeks later and didn’t want to disturb the new seed. So now seed#1 is really tall and seed #2 is just getting established. Can I mow this?
Yes you can mow since the first seed is established enough.
Big_Wishbone91
Highest setting on mower. Mow every 2 days dropping the deck setting down by 1 until desired height of cut is achieved.

Oh you’re stuck now. You can never mow this again. Now you have a field of wild grass all around your home. Have a nice life.

When did you last seed?
stpg1222
What choice do you have? You’re not going to sweet talk it into getting shorter.

Mow and bag the grass for the for the first few mowings.
Ricka77_New
Just cut it now. Highest deck setting, and go very slow to make sure it’s all getting cut well, and I would recco bagging to avoid getting excess cutting all over the grass…
Do it again tomorrow, then wait a day, and repeat. Keep the deck high, taller grass is healthy grass.

I had the same issue. I used a string trimmer for the first cut taking off ~1/3. I’ll probably do the same again in a couple of days before using the mower on the highest setting.

Set mower high.
Cut and bag, and bag the clippings
vinegarstrokes420
Mow on the highest setting and bag the first mow. Then mow in a few days and drop it down half an inch or an inch. Continue until desired height is reached.

I guess you just can’t mow until next year now. Sit down and throw back a few brewskis.
Please take after photo from the same spot. It’s gonna look great after a clean cut.
hotsauceboss222
Cut on high setting while making passes that are only 1/2 uncut grass. I would then make a second pass to even it out. Could bag it if you have an easy dump of the clippings

1/3 ruke every 2/3 days. Or the highest setting in your case. It will come good👌

It’s fine cut it by hand with scissors

I had a customer with a lawn like this. Bees had set up shop in the grass in one section and were swarming and angry. While I’m working on the other side of the lawn I look over and see this man pour the last bit of gasoline out of a can and proceed to set the lawn on fire.
So fire is an option I guess.
rocketmn69_
Cut it as high as your deck can go. Leave it for a day. Drop it an inch and cut it again. Wait a day or 2 then drop another inch. Keep doing it until you get to your desired height

cut as high as you can and work your way down. Get a Scythe?
MudrakM
Just mow it with a trimmer. The only bad thing is that tall grass is great for snakes and critters.

No mow May is over… Get to work!

Damn wish I saw this a few days ago haha I just went extra high on the mow. It’s a little more like green than usual but seems to be doing fine, going to be a lot more gradual next time.

Mannnnn I’m so jealous of this, I love a good turnaround. The first time you get it all cleaned up… so satisfying.

Am I the only one bothered by the foxtail? I’m battling that right now in my yard. Pull it, then mow.
I would not rake. It’s been my experience that the roots are not established enough to rake. I usually end up raking seedlings out.

Just mow. The 1/3 rule is important for ongoing maintenance but a single deep cut will have no negative impact on the turf.
In fact you can regularly cut 3/4 of the leaf off without harming it and the 1/3 rule is just a conservative rule of thumb from 50 years ago.
Edit: here’s some [sauce](https://www.extension.iastate.edu/turfgrass/blog/story-13-rule) and I was a little wrong. You have to *regularly* remove 3/4 or more of the leaf to cause harm. Even cutting half off every mow is going to be without issue.
Brush it with a broom.
