  1. First year growing one or two veggies.

I have a super sweet 100, 4th of July slicer tomato, Kentucky Wonder pole green beans, a Lunch Box sweet pepper, sweet basil, 5 romaine lettuces and a sunflower in a 2x2x4 stock tank (water trough) thats filled almost halfway with a version of hugelkultur. So far, so good! I have an A frame trellis with 9 pole beans along it and the 5 romaine underneath the A frame. I know it'll take time to grow a canopy, so I put burlap over the A frame for a few hours of shade in the afternoon while we are experiencing hot wear next door to NJ. Crossing fingers 🤞 it doesn't bolt.

In a 15-gallon grow bag, I have 4 ever bearing strawberries and a sweet basil plabt. In another 15-gallon grow bag, I have 2 cucumbers, a sweet basil, and 1 Alyssum. In a 5 gallon grow bag Carolina reaper pepper and 1 romaine behind it for shade. I have 5 june bearing strawberries in a terracotta strawberry pot, 2 bell peppers andna portaluca in a square cedar planter, 1 broccoli and 1 Alyssum in another cedar planter and I have 3 peanut plants growing in a large tote.

I still have to plant a patio tomato in a pot and a sugar cube cantaloupe in a large flower pot. Im doing that tomorrow after getting free compost from a nursery around the corner from me. I spent enough on organic outdoor potting soil and coco coir brickd to fill the top half of the water trough and two 15-gallon grow bags.

Crossing fingers 🤞 it all works out. ❤

  2. I can feel your passion when you talk about gardening. I love that because i feel the same way. Thank you for sharing your tips. I'm in central 😅 Wisconsin . Where are you located? I am only one step from beginner on gardening, but I'm doing ok. Had a few casualties so far this year, but that happens. I always have back-ups for emergencies. 😊 PLEASE keep doing these videos!! I don't speak up much but needed to let you know you've made a difference in my life and thank you!

  3. Your videos encourage me to go work on it each day. It's getting hot now and I just want to sit inside in the a/c. What a waste that would be! Thank you, James! I sprouted strawberries this winter that need planting out. One already is starting with runners while she was still small in the cell. So excited.
June is where our planting guides begin to align. Some people don't turn their soil until mid-June if their soil is wetter. My soil has some soggy spots. It's better not to turn wet soil as it can turn hard and clumpy and take a few rains to soften back up.
Just love seeing Tuck eating peppers. He's quite the nutrition influencer. ~ Miss you, Tuck
    🍉🍎🍓🥕🫑♥🐕♥

  4. It was funny when you said you can't keep tuck away when you are trying to eat cantelopes! That made me laugh.

  5. I love watching you you're just so upbeat and 🙂 thank you for all your wonderful tips I appreciate it so so much❤❤❤

  6. There are varieties of cucumbers that will set fruit without needing to be pollinated (Parthenocarpic) and have all female flowers (Gynoecious) that can be grown under netting the whole time. Johnny's seeds has a variety called Sashimi (long thin oriental variety) that is really good. Improvement over Tasty Jade (my long time favorite) which it replaced.

Did you lose Tuck? I'm so sorry. I know what a hole that leaves in life.

  7. ❤ for Tuck! 🐾
I started tomatoes indoors in early April and many of the plants are still only 2-3 inches tall with no true leaves. Just seed leaves. They are alive but not growing. Very frustrating. 🙁

  8. The quantities you grow are amazing. You couldn't possibly eat it all. I'm curious what you do with it all. Thanks for your expertise. I hope you aren't too affected by the Canadian smoke.

  9. 70 grow days in the southern interior of BC. Built a greenhouse gonna try to push the season. Awesome show man!

  10. My mom actually plants sweet potatoes in two places in her garden. One patch for the potatoes and one patch that she harvests the young vines from to eat.

The way I remember how to fertilize is by the saying “up, down and all around”. That’s how I look at the NPK numbers. If I have plants that produce above ground, I use a fertilizer that has a higher nitrogen. For my plants that produce underground, I use a fertilizer that is higher in phosphorus. And for my plants that aren’t really for food production, I use an “all around” fertilizer. Bone and blood meal are always part of my fertilizers also.

For growing rice, try using a kiddie pool. It’s just deep enough you can put a bit of soil in it and still have water enough to grow the rice.

  11. I'm in the south of the UK and I have 189 expected frost free days left which is great because the weather has been abysmal up to this point!

  12. I had no clue you could grow that many beans in a square foot. I have a 3 x 3 raised bed with nine plants. As soon as the sun comes up, I'm adding more.
