I’m on Vancouver Island (near Duncan) just wondering if I should be ripping any of these. This is a former garden patch that I let the bees have this year since I didn’t want to devote the water and time to growing crops

I think a better question would be: “see anything native?” Because I’m sure 90% of these plants are invasive/non native

Looks like mostly non-natives, unfortunately. I see oxeye daisy, rose campion and sow thistle…

Some yarrow and lupine would be good for a low maintenance sunny spot like this. They’re everywhere in BC, no need to buy them just check your local ditches lol! Lupine is going to seed right now, they look like pea pods. Yarrow will be in bloom soon.

  3. I’m in Europe and I recognize almost all of them as being native here so probably not a good sign.

Definitely pull the thistles right away. You don’t want them to spread.
If you don’t want to go through the work of fully removing the lawn, I would get some native wildflower seeds like yarrow and self-heal, sea blush, field chickweed and wooly sunflower and start them in pots to plant in the fall when you mow down the field so they will have a better chance to survive than sowing seeds.

Satinflower Nurseries sells seeds on line at about $6 pack. Buckerfields sells Metchosin Seeds which have a few types of native seeds.

That oxeye daisy takes over in my fields. It’s pretty, but unwelcome because of its greedy and bullying behavior. It gets sprayed, pulled, mowed, and weed whacked.
