Micro & dwarf tomatoes might be tiny… but they still need the right pot to thrive!

In this video, I’m potting up all of my micro and dwarf tomato plants into their final homes — and answering that key question: what size pot is best for these compact varieties?

Whether you’re growing indoors on a windowsill or looking to maximise a small garden space, getting the pot size right makes all the difference. I’ll walk you through:

Which tomato varieties I’m growing
The three pot sizes I use and why
How smaller pots can actually control plant size
Tips to keep your micro tomatoes healthy and fungus-free
And a test how different pot sizes affect growth

  1. Great video, I'm only growing Tiny Tims this year, they look gorgeous. Indeterminate tomatoes get spindly and weird before they can move out of the living room, but bush tomatoes look lovely all the way. It's time to pot up in the weekend, so this was perfect timing!
I find it odd it can be called "dwarf" and grow to 1,20 meters. That's almost my height, lol! 😅

  2. This is my first year deliberately growing micro tomatoes. (I had some once and didn't know that's what they were. Complete disaster that time). Anyway, they seem to be doing well. I have loads of little green tomatoes so far. After watching this, I probably could have used a pot one size larger for them, but fingers crossed for the little guys! Next time, though, I'll have a better idea. Thanks!!

  3. Hi Eli, first time this year growing tiny tim, so what size pit shall i plant them in , they're coming along nicely but soon it will be time to pot on. Great video by the way, thanks ..

  4. Such a great video …
I'm sure you read my mind as Ive been trying to decide what size pots to use for my dwarf & micro tomatoes for a couple of weeks now ….
First time I've ever sown dwarf & micro 1's & I'm so happy with the results …super healthy plants …Im so proud of them …
However ….why I didn't listen to your words of wisdom ….I dont know ….as all of mine germinated /have grown so well & now I have soooo many plants 😂😂😂❤❤

  5. Really cool. I didn’t realise it was warm enough yo have them in the greenhouse yet. I’m struggling with mine on a desk in my office getting leggy as they reach for the light. Will you be planting anything in your quad grow this year? I’m doing some tomatoes and cucumbers but then some pea sized tomatoes that are indeterminate and a few that are micro and dwarf. Your planting up sizing is very helpful.

  6. You inspired me to sow some micros (Aztek) in order to use more of my windowsills as additional garden space. Thanks a lot for that idea😊 Their germination rate was perfect – unfortunately😃 since some windows are taken by sweet peppers. They are my experiment. I'm testing if it's possible to grow peppers in three litre terracotta pots. They have 7-10 fruits each, still green, so the jury's still out. Its exciting! I'm looking forward to seeing the results of your experiment as well😊

  7. I'm growing Gartenperle tomatoes – in pots in my porch they're smaller than most tomatoes but a bit bigger than cherry tomatoes 🌿🍅🌿🍅🌿

  8. Oh, I wish I was growing micro’s and dwarf now. I’ve fallen for the usual ones again, but now I’m getting on a bit, it would have made life easier!! Next year I’m definitely going down your route 😊Thank you Eli and Kate.

  9. Eli I had a mishap with my produce! I was carrying my supermarket purchased tomato and strawberry seeds buckets and I tripped, through myself to the ground, and spilled the contents of my newly sown buckets! My husband came to help me up and swept up the soil and seeds and divided it all between the buckets !
So now I have pots with Tomberries and Strawtoes 😜😜😜 I’m waiting to see the outcome!
As for my husband – I wouldn’t get another one! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

  10. If you grow tomatoes on your windowsill, how do they get pollinated and produce fruit? I don’t have bees or other pollinators in my kitchen 😊

  11. Always enjoyable to see your videos! It feels like a trip to Scotland home to one of my ancestors! Happy gardening from Oregon USA

  12. Hi Eli, decided to add some micro dwarfs too after watching your video, few months back. Went after Mongolian Dwarf, Fat Frog, Yellow Budgie and Tartufo. But I'm also growing bigger ones, this year I went after selection of anthocyianin rich varieties. That Antho Pink Panther is one of them, mine already outside and colder nights already fortify it with anthocyianins, unlike regular tomatoes their leaves don't go yellow-purple when it's colder but dark, verry very dark, almost black. I cannot wait until they start to ripen, Some of the micro dwarfs, already have half inch size green tomatoes. And the weather is pleasant so far this season.

  13. I love the micro tomatoes but, unfortunately, I can't grow them on my window sills. All my windows are facing northwest.

  14. This was perfect timing video for me. Growing dwarf and micro tomatoes this year. Wasn’t sure how large a pot I was to use as their final pot. Thank you, this was so informative. I greatly appreciate the advice.

  15. Nice video Eli,
as there have been no frosts in central Scotland, but low temps overnight are you still doing the hokey cokey with peppers , tomatoes every morning to ensure no cold damage ( still only about 5c overnight ) , I m tempted to stick them in the greenhouse overnight. thanks again

  16. I ve dwarf variety and was wondering what to pot them to once they ll grow bigger. That was really useful- I ve never grew anything but trying gardening out this year:)

  17. Great video and just in time! ☺ I have 3 types of micodwarfs growing and was just trying to suss out their final pots. Quick question, how many do you think I could plant per layer in the greenstalk? I have the one with some shallow tiers and some deep. I was thinking only 4 in the deep tiers but now, after this video, I'm thinking I could go to all 6 pockets? 🤔

  18. Eli please can you tell me how to feed tomatoes in the Quadgrows without having to use the nutrigold feed. Its so expensive and it's not organic .

  19. I have just found you! So happy to get advice from a gardener in my own country which helps a lot when determining what to grow and do. Just a little container garden i started last year that brought so many rewards and vastly improved my mental health. I couldn’t believe i grew cut and come again lettuce all summer long. Yes, child’s play but because of that success and the way I felt it was worth its weight in gold, that lettuce! Tiny little garden but onwards and upwards and my nasturtiums are popping up all over the place. Tomatoes this year, so thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us for free. ❤
