Perfect timing for us in Northern, MI who had a frost sneak up upon us. Of course, had I been behind on my garden I wouldn’t have lost my tomato plants that I started from seed for the first time. Thank you for the encouragement. It’s easy to remind yourself of all the ways you “messed up” and harder to remind yourself of all the things going right! I look forward to my garlic and onion harvest this year, and now I look forward to picking out new tomatoes from the local greenhouse to replace the ones frosted out.
😂 I've been complaining about the one thing for days, it has rained so much in May that the tomatoes are getting blight (one got yanked this morning) & the peppers are yellowing. But, I don't rave that we have harvested more summer squash & potatoes than ever & our first time growing cabbage & broccoli have been a huge success. I think it's human nature to focus on the negative
I agree with this video. None, none of my seedlings worked out the way I wanted them to this year so I had to buy my plants this year.. I'm still pissed about it.
Good morning Luke and thank you so much for sharing, I needed reminding of this!! Your grandfather sounds like a wise man and his advice could be incorporated into not only one's garden, but LIFE overall!! ❤️🥰🙏🙏
Different here in mississippi. Straight from cold to hot with rain. Ugh
In michigan really april 20th im in maines mines may15 very weird
I’m behind in my planting too. The nighttime temps were too cold up to a little past mid-May & once they finally reached just 50 degrees, the daytime temps were already up to 80-90 degrees!! 🥵😡
(welcome to the desert)
Good point! Also, love all the different camera angles while you’re planting 😊
north jersey this morning, JUNE 2, 47 degrees at sun-up. wtf! border of PA/NY further west, frost advisories! Just too much rain lately, cloudy days. plants are doing…ok but peppers tomatoes and eggplants seem to be in a holding pattern. Not to much vertical growth, more stress and early flowering.
I’m starting all sorts of native seeds now haha. 😲
As a gardener, me and my best friend had a greif stricken year due to unfortunate events. We both grew flowers and lacked on a lot of the other stuff. Still bouncing back, but it's very promising. Sometimes it takes a small team to tackle the big things. And there is a season for everything. God bless!!!
I am in my middle 70's and I just started a business selling plants from home! I am investing money, energy and time. I sometimes wonder WHY I am even doing this at my age. My Dad passed when he was in his early 70's, my Mom was , 80 and six months old when she passed. I survived throat cancer by two years and will now be starting extensive dental work because of the damage radiation treatments did to my teeth which have the risk of taking my life from infections that can develop from that very work. So here's my take. What else would I be doing if I do nothing? I would not be healthy in other aspects. I would be a couch potato, I would not be exercising. I would not be ENJOYING my life. I refuse to sit back and let the worry of what is left of my life span stop me from enjoying whatever time I have left keep me from moving forward. It is what it is! Get on with life and don't let the anticipation of the end of our life hinder the wonderful time we REALLY have left! Get out there. Do what you love. Enjoy your life and happy gardening!!!
Thanks, I needed to hear this today. Its been so cold here in nj that I just got my cukes in the ground and just said a prayer that they survive.
I am in NY and keep having to cover everything at night because of low temps. Also the blossoms are falling off my tomatoes. I wonder if it is from the row covers? Any thoughts as to causes?
This is my first year really gardening and I went the crazy end of the spectrum and started way too many plants now I'm late to get them in the ground. I needed this video to not feel like a failure. Learning a lot this year thanks for the encouragement!
I’m glad the rain slowed me down, because what I HAVE gotten planted is growing slowly.
I could’ve just waited!
I’m learning patience.😋
Plastic w holes covered 2 nites down to 2C
No frost warning but not losing plants❤
Now all uncovered white row cover after 20C
Baby em they like it@!!!!😅😂❤seeds n plants have a life cycle beyond US❤😂😅
I need to remind myself to watch this each spring!
I haven’t planted a tomato plant yet. In my area of SE Michigan gets lows of 45. But…I planted today and said just that! Survival of the fittest. My potato plants are going crazy thought and hope below are growing them too. Oh well…it is what it is. Love the channel….
It has been a strange year for sure. We are finally getting warm, now we are getting good chances of rain for the next 5 days starting Wednesday. But fortunately was able to get it out in early May. But still got it out. I live in Southern Illinois.
I agree Luke. There is always something. I'm in your same growing zone and I planted too early. My cucumbers/watermelon died due to the cold temps and my peppers are stunted. I've started a new batch of cucumbers and they''re already starting to take off. It's just part of gardening.
Great tribute to Grandpa!❤
“Survive or die baby”. OMG that is gardening in Michigan’s UP! I’m putting my seedlings in the ground today, once I finish this video and drink my coffee.
Enjoy the small pleasures in life.. Some of my favorite times are in the garden just going through and munching on fresh things I grew
june 2nd and It's too cold here to start my outdoor plants! 🤔🙄Quebec! Last year we traveled for 7 weeks of the seed starting/planting season but I was still able to grow potatoes and other easy stuff! it is what we make of it!
Way behind in Ohio. So cold……….June 2 and just started getting in the ground.

Yesterday it was 38 degrees in my garden…Celsius though 😉
I have raised beds in my backyard and gardened for 10 years. This year is the worst of them all. I am a month behind and in addition voles moved in. Peas, beets, dill and cucumber seedling have been eaten by them. Thank goodness, I have a grow bag area also, green stalks, and a plot in a community garden. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket.
Iowa has been mild. Was able to get plants transplanted early. We have been dealing with dry conditions, then have 5" of rain in 3 days, now dry again. Patio greenhouse helps me, if above 32 plants stay the night in there.they were use to all the fluctuations.
One of your "things" is not having a little 12 volt sump pump to fill your ibc totes. A deepcycle 12 volt battery and a little solar panel charger. Set it up with alligator clamps on the pump. Hook a hose to the pump. Put the hose in the tote. Hook the pump clamps to the battery. Viola. ❤
I remember as a teen working the fields in Florida .They rarely had freezing temps. The watermelon farmers had ús cover a plant one at a time , when it was going to freeze. They had us place what looked like a firemen's hat over each plant , to keep them from freezing. We placed soil around the rim of these covers ,to hold them down. They were made of frosted fiberglass material. Once the freeze was over, we went back and removed the covers. It was done every time it was going to freeze. We did this for $1.00 an hour in cash. Don't know what happened to S.S . Withholding was never mentioned. 🤔
I feel behind schedule for everything this summer!
I needed this today Luke. Thank you. My one thing this gardening season was at the height of building our new homestead, inside and out, my youngest died of an overdose. I’ve spent the last two months in a fog. Last night I began to plant some seeds and find a glimmer of joy creating this new homestead and garden. The garden has always brought me peace and food. I needed to give myself some grace to just take things one step at a time, one hour at a time. But I do know the garden will keep me grounded and someday I’ll feel peace again.
