My local plant shop (Arium Botanicals in Portland) had a desert plant event and had two of my dream plants for sale. Obviously I had to buy them! I've been reading some people say Welwitschia's don't need very tall pots. I don't plant on reporting my guy for a while until he us used to new parameters of my home, however, would the hasami porcelain pot I have attached be an appropriate choice when I do decide to repot(3.5inx4.8in)? Any tips for repotting? I plan on repotting my Dorstenia gigas soon too but I am less picky about pot selection for him. Any additional tips would be greatly appreciated but I'm glad to join this community with some very special plants!

I reported my welwitchia this spring and it died shortly after. I live in dry Arizona where I’ve never had issues reporting regardless of time of year so that one was surprising to me. My gigas took repotting like a champ. I down sized into a tall skinny pot from a one gallon and it’s been thriving.
UC Davis Conservatory posted a good tip recently about repotting welwitschia. Essentially they are very sensitive to their taproot drying out completely, so the suggestion was to do the removal from the old container submerged in a tub of distilled water. I’ve also been told to make sure you have the new container and mix ready to go so the roots aren’t out in the open for any length of time.
While they don’t need a deep pot specifically, they are basically trees and want room for their roots. I’d think you’d be moving to a gallon pot from that one when it’s time. The ceramic you show would require very frequent watering and would probably stunt growth.
Keep the Wellie wet at the roots and warm. They’re kinda easy to care for, but they need super specific conditions to be happy.
Great haul ;))
