I am propagating pothos cuttings in water. I change the water every few days, and this cutting has been in for probably 2 months waiting for it to grow roots. As I was changing the water today I noticed this white fuzzy growth. I’ve never seen it before and i’m curious if anyone has any idea what it is? It’s located on the original stem, not on the new roots and it’s no where else on the plant.
The plant is in a jar of water in my south facing window. It has sprouted the beginnings of 2 new leaves and 2 roots in ~2 months.

Looks like mealy bug to me
Is that part of the plant in the water? Looks like actual new root growth

Looks like root primordia! Just a sign of new root growth
That definitely looks like very start of new roots. Also, there’s no need to change the water because pothos produce a rooting hormone. If you just top off the prop vessel with fresh water, it’ll grow those new roots faster!
You can add a pothos cutting to other props for this purpose as well!
Edit for clarification
If it’s fluffy like a egg sack it’s mealy bugs. I had a infestation but I sprayed organic pesticides every week and they went away after a couple weeks
You could solve the mystery by trying to remove it with a Q-tip. If it comes off, it’s a bug. If it doesn’t come off, it’s a root.
No way that’s not mealy bugs!!!!!!!!!
Roots, do not remove
Okay, maybe not mealy bugs. Just try removing with a cotton swab. Simple to find out, and now a bunch of us are very curious!!!
Please just try removing before I lost my mind!!!
If it’s roots, the q-tip won’t disturb it!!!
I freaked out a few weeks ago seeing this on my propagating pothos!!! Learned it’s just the roots doing their thang!!
Update: can confirm it is the roots! Q-tip (not just any tip) didn’t remove it. thanks everyone for the tips and answers!
