A “flourishing” wildlife garden found in the “rolling countryside” of the North East, with more than 700 flowers to see, has been crowned among the UK’s best gardens to visit.
Dilston Physic Garden in Northumberland was praised by The Guardian for its “fragrant camomile lawn” and is said to “whisper ‘slow down’” to those that visit.
Introducing one of its latest outdoor guides, the publisher shared: “From a castle in Cumbria to a subtropical paradise in Cornwall, these are some of the top unsung gardens across the country.”

What makes Dilston Physic Garden one of UK’s best gardens?
The Guardian shared: “Set in rolling countryside close to the Devil’s Water river, Dilston is a garden that whispers ‘slow down’.
“Over three decades, a hectare of agricultural land has been transformed into a flourishing wildlife garden filled with more than 700 flowers, herbs, vegetables and trees planted with biodiversity and natural healing in mind.
“A rewilding and wetland area has encouraged native flora, such as the Northumbrian bloody cranesbill, to thrive.
“Visit the ‘spirit henge’, breathe in the fragrant camomile lawn, wander the labyrinth and buy products made with ingredients from the garden in the shop (proceeds to the registered charity).
“Dilston is on the Corbridge Heritage Trail, and a scenic 20-minute walk along the Tyne from Corbridge station.”
On its website, Dilston Physic Garden describes itself as “an extraordinary botanic garden and sanctuary in nature”.
Meanwhile, over on Tripadvisor, the wildlife garden has been complimented by recent visitors and is said to be a “peaceful and tranquil” place.

Someone commented: “Lovely quirky garden. There was a lot of information on the various plants and some lovely ornaments and sculptures dotted around. It was peaceful, had plenty of seating to just sit or eat a packed lunch. All ages would enjoy this garden, including children. Drinks are available in the shop there. Very friendly lady serving in the shop.”
Another added: “A beautiful tranquill garden filled with amazing scents from the herbal plants, so calming and lots of hidden corners to sit and relax. There are lovely sculptures and artworks dotted around. There is a herbalist to advice on the remedies for sale in the little shop.Our dog was welcome too, i could have spent all day there! I will definitely be back.”
Dilston Physic Garden is open Wednesday – Sunday from April – October and Friday – Sunday, from November – March.
