The Laurel Jones County Council of Garden Clubs selected the Waggoners’ home at 549 6th Ave. in Laurel as the Yard of the Month for May. The award was presented to the family by Iris Garden Club President Geri Looney and second vice-president Pat Ezell. The flower beds on each side of the stoop entry appear to be mostly green shrubbery, but on closer inspection, pots of red geraniums flank the steps, and a bed of red periwinkles line the back of the flower beds and is mostly seen from inside the home or from the stoop. A gas lantern with variegated ivy is located in the front of the yard and is accompanied by a string of graduated concrete turtles. Homeowner Leslie Waggoner said that she is much like a turtle — if she feels like socializing, she sticks her head out, but if not, she simply keeps her head in her shell. (Photo submitted)
