I received this plant as a gift 2 weeks ago and just a few days ago I noticed these white patches on the soil. I’ve watered it twice since I’ve received it. It’s been kept indoors, not near windows.

Please help me identify what type of plant it is, what the white patches are, and how best take care of it.

Any and all information is greatly appreciated!

Note: I live in the Middle East where temperatures are around 50C so the AC is running all day and the window shutters are down. Just thought I’d mention this in case it can affect the care of the plant.

  1. Plant looks like a variegated dracaena, other stuff looks like mold. Sprinkle ground cinnamon on the mold and that should kill it.

  2. trikakeep

Draceana warneckii, maybe a variety like White Jewel. Just use a chopstick or something to stir up the soil. The white is just a harmless surface mold and stirring up the top of the soil will interrupt its growth

  3. Dracaenas do best with some bright light. You say the shutters are down, does that mean there’s no sunlight in the plants area?

Also be careful to not overwater it, especially if it’s not getting much light. The surface mold is harmless but could indicate the soil is staying too wet, which will eventually rot the roots. Don’t water it again until the soil dries out some
