Started off last spring with mostly moss, weeds and dead grass. After a harsh winter with a lot of snow and unstable weather with thawing and freezing back and forth. The lawn was pretty much covered with ice most of the winter. Wanted to do something about it, so I watched some YouTube videos and read some guides and got inspired.
Bought a scarifier/verticutter and started with removing as much moss, dead grass and the thick spongy layer of thatch. After that I did a rough leveling with screened topsoil from other parts of our garden, using my home made lawn lute / rake. And then over-seeding using a classic Swedish lawn mix with Rye, Creeping red fescue and some Kentucky blue.
The over-seeding was a failure most likely due to too little water. Trying to keep seeds wet for weeks in hot and dry weather is apparently a bit of a challenge without a watering timer 😬 Was left with patches of grass in a weed jungle. And since most herbicides are banned here in Sweden, it was down to hand picking weeds and regular mowing.
Bought a cheap Einhell brand battery cylinder mower (Similar to the Yardforce, Sunjoe and Ozito etc) in July and that was a game changer. Got addicted to mowing and started mowing as often as I could the rest of the summer / early fall. And I could see the lawn getting thicker and thicker week after week.
After a mild winter and an over-seeding it’s already looking better than ever. If it continues like this I might reach my goal of having the best lawn in my small town by the end of the season. Currently at a HoC of 35mm goal is 23mm as last year.
No brooms were harmed in the making of this post.
