Families looking for an afternoon of food, flowers and fun can plan for an evening in the garden with the Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Caldwell County.
The June 19 event will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Unity Park and Community Garden, on College Avenue in Lenoir, said Sarah Christas, horticulture extension agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension in Caldwell County.
A variety of activities and education will take place during the evening, including a pollinator garden tour, at 5:45 p.m., a food demonstration by extension agent and retired dietitian Margie Mansure, at 6:15 p.m., free blueberry snowcones, a 4-H information booth, kids activities, an Ask a Gardener station and a flower arranging activity for children and adults, and an opportunity to learn how volunteers are making a difference.
The event is a way to highlight the community garden.
“A lot of people … that live in Lenoir don’t even know there’s a community garden,” Christas said.
It started with First Saturdays in the garden, Christas said. Caldwell County Center organized events on the first Saturdays of the growing season where Master Gardeners could answer the community’s gardening questions, and center staff shared details on upcoming plans and harvests.
The event is open to the public at no cost.
