Recently moved into a new house – cleared an area a couple of weeks ago where the last owners used to keep the wheely bins and today found these guys growing there. Is this wild asparagus?! Anyone know if they’re edible?!
Yep, keep picking for a couple of weeks then leave them alone to recover for next years crop.

Yes that’s asparagus, I used to have it growing randomly in the front garden of my old house. We harvested it and ate it. Catch it early before it goes over, should come back each year

I don’t mean to be alarmist. And i do think this is just asparagus. But Japanese knotweed is known to look like asparagus when it first starts to grow.

This is regular garden asparagus. Wild Asparagus is a rare native plant with prostrate stems, found near the coast in SW England and S Wales.

Yes, but not for long pick and enjoy!

It looks quite thin (but maybe that is the variety). I think it is too late to use this year, so leave it to grow. Give it a good feed. Cut it down to the ground in autumn when it dies back. Mulch over the top heavily with compost. Enjoy next year for a few weeks of harvesting before leaving to grow and repeat the process.

Like someone else said it’s not wild but it is asparagus! What a treat because it comes back every year! And it takes three whole years to grow them from seed 🙂 what a gem to uncover.

Well today I learned this is how asparagus grows! I’m amazed there’s no leaves or anything, just straight up asparagus spears growing out of the ground!
