The second mow, will even it all out. Plan your walking path. Do two to three perimeter runs first, then walk back and forth in straight lines or try the diagonal approach. Mow every week in spring, bring that height up to 3 to 4 inches inches, and slow down mowing when it’s really hot. In the fall, drop the height and cut short for your final mow of the season. Good luck!

Y’all are being dicks, sheesh. Not everybody’s has the exact same life experience as you. My dad taught me to mow and made me do it a lot growing up. Not everybody gets that.
OP, try to think of your yard from a bird’s eye view. Like you’re looking down on it. Mow around the edges a few times to make a border. Then, just go back and forth as straight as you can. Use the wheel tracks in the grass your mower will make to keep your lines straight. If the grass is really tall, don’t drop the mower deck down super low or it’ll clump up real bad. Keep 2-3 notches from the highest setting.
I’m sure this isn’t the most highly-optimized way to mow your lawn and get it looking like everybody in this sub, but it’s a good place to start.

With the wooden shed, the light and the framing, it looks like a CG shot from a game like COD or RDR. Congrats OP on the lawn. With regular feeding, watering and mowing, you should be able to make your lawn look great. At least it’s a good starting point.

You guys have some thick grass down there in Arkansas I’m from Michigan so the grass is thin, my yard is full of dandelions. You do have a nice yard. You’ll figure it out. Don’t worry about it being patchy. May I stress, please take care of your lawnmower, like you would a car. 🙂

Hey man congrats on your first mow. You will get it down. What i like to do to make it look not so daunting of a task is to break it up in sections. I break my backyard up into 5 sections alone. See if that can work for you as well. I see a lot of great ideas from the others in here as well. Keep going and be proud of yourself.
