What happened to my lawn? Last fall this began to crop up and I thought it was just taxed from the summer. But it didn’t recover this year. I have already applied weed and feed for the year, is there any easy solution of fertilizers or treatments I can do to get it to come back? Or should I just over seed the whole thing this fall? I live in northern WI.

I’d like to hear others’ thoughts but part of me immediately goes to fungus or cinche bugs. I’m leaning toward brown patch though. Usually what I do because I am lazy is throw Talstar or some other pesticide in with something like propiconazole for the fungus. Tank mix them with a surfactant, two birds with one stone.

  2. Too many factors. Are you watering too much? Inviting grubs or cinche bugs? How often do you water, how long and what’s the last time of the day?
Could it be fert burn? Did you hand apply the fert by hand maybe were uneven with the application? Or use a spreader?

Water is shooting over the dead spots. Water dead spots.

Are you watering with Gatorade by chance?

This certainly looks like a fungal issue. I’d do an application of Headway. Overseed, if you have not put down a pre em yet. Water 2-3 x a week for 1 inch each time between 4-7 am.

Hard to say without a soil test. My guess is to high of nitrogen or grubs. I like to use grubex in april and stick to a 13-13-13 vs some of these 20 + nitrogen fertilizers unless I am overseeding or new grass. I would also say that for cool season grass grow to 3.5 o 4.5 inches and remove .5 to 1″ per mow. This lawn looks scalped to me.

Have you tried poking for rocks or hard soil?

  8. Overfertlized? I got that when i used a little too much fertilizer. You are supposed to go go light on the fertilizer and heavy on the lime.

Otherwise, that grass is cut really low. I keep mine at a 3.

The weed n feed is your problem if you’re using that every year. You’re burning your lawn and inviting other problems along the way. Stop using weed n feed products. Focus more on fertilizer only and preemergent for weeds prevention. Take a look at my lawn care calendar I follow through the year. Focus on first column for now and water regularly at least 3x a week. Now my calendar is warm season focused so the timeframes would be different for you but products still apply the same. Also start putting down milorganite monthly and a higher rate to promote new growth.
