Hi native plants lovers. Is this blue eyed grass growing in my front lawn??? It is so pretty. I hope it is native. š¤
If it is native, any advice on how to transplant it before I cut the grass? There are 13 little clumps!

Yes that looks like blue eyed grass to me. Its native! Congratulations.
Oh, sweet! I had to buy mine. Can you send me some??? LOL.
I actually successfully transplanted some clumps a few years ago by just pulling them up and planting them. They did great until this season when my nemesis the Gout Weed overtook that part of my garden⦠I donāt want to talk about it.
So fortunate. Lovely.
Just dig and plant where you want it.
Yes. Sisyrinchium can be a lawn weed (a welcome one in this case). IDing to species can be tricky for this genus.
I was stopped at a red light next to a particularly glum corner that is mostly undesirables and trash, but noticed the sweetest little patch of Blue Eyed Grass amongst the junk. What a great plant!
I took these from a part of my yard that would get mowed and put them in my perennial bed. They are thriving. Love these things.
For so long I have watched this mysterious beauty popping up in my yard. Thanks reddit.
I got a bunch of volunteer blue eyed grass too! Such a lovely surprise.
Dear OP, thank you so much for inadvertently answering a question I hadnāt even asked about how to spotlight my blue eyed grass (Iām also in Ontario). Ā Itās going into the natives bed!!! Woohoo!
Lucky ducky
There are exotic, naturalized species of blue-eyed grass. I wouldn’t go propagating this volunteer without confirming the species. Details like the length of the stamen or style can be helpful in making a determination.Ā
Lucky!
Easy to transplant. If you want to confirm with a key. https://gobotany.nativeplanttrust.org/dkey/sisyrinchium/ I also divided some of mine, they are very easy. In Virginia they prefer partial shade.
Blue-eyed grass will persist in oldfield even under mowing maintenance. I found it in our 50yr old apple orchard that was mowed for decades. Beautiful little plants.
Yeah I thought this was a weed, came in my grass seed I think. Glad to know itās native.
It’s a perennial, it’ll grow back if you mow it.
You could mark it, mow around it, wait a week or two for the seed heads to form and turn brown (they’re distinctive little balls) then collect and spread.
Or you could grab a trowel and dig up around them or attempt to divide them. They are irises so they’re quite hardy and transplant-friendly. As long as you don’t totally eviscerate them when digging them up they should survive just fine. I’ve done it with annual blue eyed grass before.
Oops! I grew this a couple years ago and I think I pulled it out š¬š
