SUAMICO (WLUK) — After months of growing inside experts say a full line of plants, vegetables, and flowers is ready to go.
For many gardeners, Memorial Day Weekend means it’s time to plant. Janice “Bunny” Matthews is shopping for the first time on Tuesday.
“I got my Roma tomatoes. I have my Mountain Spring tomatoes. And I have my green peppers, my red peppers, my yellow peppers. And just that right now. I’m just starting,” said Janice “Bunny” Matthews, Howard.
A couple of greenhouses over, Dawn Williamson says she’s filling her list for flowers.
“I came in and I bought all of the vegetables. So now, I got that done. Now it’s time for the fun stuff,” said Dawn Williamson, Abrams.
“We specialize in hanging baskets. We grow about 15,000 hanging baskets, annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, shrubs trees,” said Grant Wery, Wery’s Blossom Creek Owner.
Grant Wery owns Wery’s Blossom Creek in Suamico. He says changing weather conditions impact any growing season, and the baskets require a lot of care.
“If you get a sun basket, it’s going to need almost a gallon of water every day. Fertilizer, once a week. As we get hotter you might need to water it twice a day,” said Wery.
Wery says some vegetables may need less water.
“It’s just watch and see. If they’re getting dry or not. You can tell by some yellow leaves,” he said.
It’s a routine Dawn Williamson says is not only productive, but therapeutic.
“I’m outside all the time, and it’s a release. It’s my time. I don’t have to worry about the phone, anybody bothering me. I’m in my own element. I love it,” she said.
Janice “Bunny” Matthews says she enjoys the harvest.
“Because you got to see the plants grow. That’s the whole thing about it. Go out and water your garden, weed it, and it’s just nice. That’s why I like it,” she said.
Wery says the flower and vegetable growing season typically wraps up after the Fourth of July.
