COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – A Memorial Day remembrance event was held at The Never Forgotten Garden inside of Veteran’s Park in College Station.
Despite the rain, dozens gathered to honor the service men and women who sacrificed everything for our country.
“Memorial Day is sacred because it truly honors those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. It’s those who didn’t come home,” said Veteran Roy May Jr.
Roy‘s father, who is his eponymous, was the keynote speaker at Monday’s event. Roy May senior told KBTX he hopes people never forget why we celebrate the holiday.
“Years ago, I saw one of those memes and [it] showed people at the beach having a great time. That was the first picture, and it said, ‘your day at the beach.’ Then there was a picture of Omaha beach on D-Day [that said ‘your day at the beach’] was brought to you by their day on the beach, and that’s always stuck with me. Everything I’ve got, I owe it to somebody else,” May Sr. emphasized.

May Jr. said he hopes Memorial Day is a day of not just somber reflection but gratitude.
“Memorial Day is a day to reflect and remember and be appreciative. It’s a day of gratitude for our freedoms, and just honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for us to enjoy those freedoms,” explained May Jr.
His father reiterated that sentiment and added that there are people whose names we don’t know who sacrificed everything they had for us and our country.
“There are people in your life you should never forget and although you don’t know some of their names, you know what they did and you cannot help but look at memorials like the wall and in Washington, D.C., and if you’re lucky enough to be in- go to Washington, D.C. and see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It will strike you. Then, there are people we don’t even know their names that gave it all,” May Sr. added.
