Great channel learned a lot about greenhouse tomatoes ๐ ๐ ๐
Always ?
The first time I saw you do that, I thought ๐คฏ Now, I'm seeing the perfect sized tomatoes that you're growing! Great job!! ๐โจ๏ธ God bless y'all! โฅ๏ธ๐โฅ๏ธ
Thank you. ๐๐ป
Is 3 per branch a good general rule for all types of tomatoes?
So I goofed and got my little burn pile a little too close to my tomato plants one day and burned nearly all of the leaves ๐คฆ๐ฝโโ๏ธ. Oddly enough, the leaves looked fine after I put out the fire & didnโt show any damage until the next day. Fire didnโt even touch the plant but apparently it was close enough to cause damage (lesson learned).
It already has small tomatoes developing and I had planned to prune it anyway, but I was only able to salvage maybe 2-3 leaves and even those are damaged slightly. Iโm a nerd so I totally understand the photosynthesis cycle but I didnโt know if the plant would make it to at least keep developing the tomatoes already on it without those leaves.
This is not a plant from my main crop – this particular plant is kinda an experiment where I harvested seeds from tomatoes I bought from a road bender last year who grew them in his little garden! It was the only one that survived the 8 seeds that I planted. All of them sprouted, but I always jump before I look and transplanted them too soon AND grew them in the winter AND I have ADHD so didnโt get all the TLC they probably needed ๐. But the 7 that didnโt make it, it wasnโt neglect that got them. 4 met their end because I would put them outside on warm sunny days and usually a storm would knock them over and destroy them and 3 of them my dog ate ๐.
On this plant tho, I have about 10 flowers, 4 of them the tomatoes are tiny but I see them, 1 is thriving though, so if I can at least get that one to mature, Iโll harvest the seeds and try againโฆ I really want to propagate these seeds because these were amazing tomatoes (and Iโm growing the potatoes I got from him – they are thriving so yay!!). But I also want to stop by his vender stand again this year and give him at least 1 tomato & some potatoโs and tell him itโs his veggies & how much I enjoyed them.
Sorry for the long explanation, but my question isโฆ
Should I just cut off those other flowers and let the 3 that are growing thrive? ๐ค
Thanks for reading all this!! โคโคโค
Do you think that maybe the tomato struggle with producing more fruit then that because of your tomato spacingโฆ
THANKS FOR THE TIP ๐
Very nice
Noooo… Tomatoes are not like grapevines. Pruning literally does nothing for the plant. The only reason to prune a tomato is for disease control. Any other reason to prune it is gardeners preference. Pruning does not change the size of the fruit. It doesn't change the quality. The only thing it changes is the amount. And you will get less the more you prune.
Like some places have more rain and are more prone to disease. Again… prune it for disease control. That's fine. But pruning it really harms the plant. And increase risk to disease as well as being overwhelmed by environmental factors. Allowing it to grow will not harm the plant in any way. It's pruning that harms the plant.
Very helpful. . .thanks ๐
What about clusters of small tomato fruits that are meant to have 20+ toms?
I don't cut off any tom fruits unless utterly deformed or way to small compared to the normal brand size. Trimming leaf growth on end of fruit stem is a good idea.
Is this for both Determinate AND Indeterminate?
Makes ZERO sense to remove biomass. Want bigger tomatoes? Increase nutrients, increase light, increase root capacity, and increase plant support. Do not prune your tomato or pepper plants.
