I’m renting this house with an attached greenhouse, located in north Texas. I had a bunch of houseplants inside it but it’s pretty sunny, humid, and hot here in the summer. As the weather started to warm up, my houseplants began to cook inside it. I’ve taken most of them out to recover but I was given the advice to cover the greenhouse to avoid that happening again.

I’d like to install a white shade cloth on the outside to help reduce some of the direct sunlight and cool it down. There are some metal hooks at the bottom where it looks like things have been attached in the past but nothing at the top/near the roof of the house. there’s about 3/4 inches of gap between the top of the greenhouse and bottom of the overhanging roof where it connects to the house. There’s also a window with a mesh screen that I’ve been leaving open to keep air circulating, and I’ve considering putting a box fan there to direct the air flow to the outside.

I’d love any advice on how to set up the shade cloth and where to get the tools to do so. I’ve been looking on Amazon and Home Depot for something that would be a good size without breaking the bank but it’s been a little overwhelming since I’m not sure what I’m doing.

Not sure if it’ll be an issue with your landlord since you’re renting but you could get a couple screw eyes. Find a rafter beam, drill in a tiny pilot hole and hand screw the screw eyes into the pilot holes. Then get bungees either with balls or hooks, size is depending on how well your shade cloth fits but it should be taught when you fix it to the screw eyes. If you have a drill + drill bits already, you can probably get a couple screw eyes and the bungees for under $20.

Amazon has shade cloth for a fair price. I would bungie or tie off to the gutter and then connect to the eye-hooks at the bottom in your photo.
