Hi all! We are looking to sell our house in the fall, and we have a big, unruly backyard (6b). We moved in about two years ago to a fixer-upper and spent the first year and a half renovating the interior. An opportunity came up to move to our dream area of the state, so now we are tasked with trying to make the yard look appealing for home buyers.

I attached a rough layout. We have a flower/herb garden and fire pit area connected by two mulched paths I dug out with berms bordering them. As you can see, there's a lot of yard that hasn't been tended or used – and the majority of it is crab grass and weeds.

Any recommendations of how I can use/fill the big space? It gets direct or dappled sub most of the day. I'm not afraid of manual labor 💪 and would love any ideas or inspiration for making this an appealing backyard that won't break the bank.

First off, I love your drawing here. Too few people sketch out what they want to see in their yard before asking questions here, and the drawings can really help!

That being said, I would do as little as possible to the landscaping of your yard before selling the house. The interior of the house is going to be the selling point for the vast majority of home buyers.

Just make it neat and tidy so that the next homeowners can decide what they want to do with it. Pull the weeds. Over seed the lawn to make it look nice and green. Power wash the siding. Power wash the driveway. Etc. If you really want to add some color, maybe look for some of those [nativar asters that grow in clumps](https://ipm.missouri.edu/meg/2024/9/aster-dt/)? Those bloom in fall when you’d be selling. Just keep in mind that anything you do might be ripped out by the next owner when they decide you were crazy for wanting xyz.

I think there’s a curb appeal subreddit, so you could ask there to see if they agree.
