SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – After a wet start to spring, gardeners across the region are finally getting a window of sunshine as gardening season is officially underway.
Western Mass News stopped by Sixteen Acres Garden Center in Springfield and they said business was picking up fast. “Time of the year, it’s definitely the vegetable garden and annuals, but we’ve had a lot of customers that are starting new gardens and new landscaping, so we have the trees to shrubs, which is like the heartbeat of a garden,” said store manager Nalini Benoit.
While recent rains have helped, last year’s drought still had some impact on some inventory. “Last year’s absolutely hurt a lot of plants because not only did we have the drought and late fall, but we had those winds into the winter and a lot of established trees and shrubs didn’t make it,” Benoit added.
Benoit said inventory looks good with plants for every budget, but with all the recent rain, she warned people to watch their garden, especially potted plants, to prevent waterlogging and bring them inside if needed.
