Journey to the Château, Ep. 308 – In this episode, Patrick and Stuart work in the chateau farm courtyard with patron volunteer Tracy to clean up the gardens and to begin adding new flower beds and plantings. Patrick gives a tour of the courtyard with some of their plans for its future. Patrick and Stuart also show a generous gift of fabrics, trims, and notions from viewer Kymmie from the UK.

So we’re armed and dangerous so Martin and
Margaret were just here and they brought a   lot of things from the UK from one of our viewers
and this is almost cadeau at the chateau so it’s   Chateau diaries at the Chateau de Colombe but
for personal reasons Kimmie stopped upholstery   and she said “I would like you to have my
upholstery things.” so here we go we have   no idea what it is and well a little I peeked
Sorry but we’re going to unpack that because   we’re really excited about having fabrics and
guimpe and all those things so let’s have a look   oh this is great because this is green
and pink Oh yeah And Wow A lot of our   new gites will be in green and pink that’s
right that’s exactly right that’s fantastic   And my gosh look how much there is of this
that’s amazing Yep Beautiful Wow Very very nice Okay I can remove it Okay Now you Okay I peaked Sorry Oh you did Yes   So you’d be very surprised Yes
how this looks on the right side Oh wow I did not expect that no not at all
wow that’s beautiful and I’ve always been   amazed by wait the right side wrong side and
sometimes you can use both now this if you use   this it would be very boring It would wow that is
beautiful and this is this is pretty heavy weight   too yes so I have an idea for this already yes
It’s going to be the big Louis 16th hall stand   that’s going to go into the gite Okay for the
seat and the yes that’s right we do need to do   cushions for that that’s exactly right fantastic
that’s lovely but you can’t keep it You have to   give it to me Oh wow Yeah I think you need to
lift that up It is really pretty yeah it’s a   damask mhm and also but it has a stripe in it as
well Look at that that’s fantastic It’s lovely Okay beautiful It’s interesting those two sides
don’t look that much different no that there again   this is just a little bit of a reverse but you
could actually might be able to use both sides   of that one Oh yes but I still would use the blue
background yeah absolutely Oh blue green beautiful   well I would say they’re remnants but they’re
actually pretty large pieces for remnants but   they’re not a whole bolt but they’re actually
right look at that that’s that’s more like an   Indian toile isn’t it It is Yes that’s Wow
that’s stunning that’s very nice and it is   incredibly thick yeah again upholstery I look at
the back so the backside is an incredible green   so this could be actually used on both sides
clearly you want you know it’s intended to   have all the flowers on it in all the different
colors right but in the right room you do the   reverse and you have the emerald green with the
white whitish flowers fantastic yes and this is   almost like a modern version of a romantic toile
plus a well and plus a watering can very cool mhm my again it’s a pattern with a stripe Yeah so
very very nice cuz these are very versatile to   use right oh look at that well that is actually
the color that’s the right side actually yes so   for me the right side is prettier than the Yes not
the wrong side but the other side yeah very cool   yeah that’s really pretty okay we still have a
Victorian settee to reupholster which is very very  tired red velvet on it Oh this is very
nice look at that lovely gold damask yeah these are this these damask prints
are always great lovely because so one side still there’s there’s there’s one side that
is more shiny than the other I mean and there we   go oh wow this is very intense oh yeah It’s like
a gold print on blue very nice It’s almost like   a batik background with a print over the top of
it isn’t it It’s really pretty very nice here’s a   bag of all assorted things Oh yes little pom pons
wait did you earlier did you say something about   zippers yes there you go Okay lots and lots
of zippers does it make you the zipper king Ah look how lovely that’s great We
can definitely find a place for that   absolutely Yes Any Oh I guess more Okay Very
nice give me Carmen Miranda oh it’s like a   clown thing It never ends look at that put
it here Wow that is long yeah that’s great   and the thing is it’s gold so it goes with
a lot of fabrics That’s great Not going to   pull this all out no cuz it’s just endless
amounts of great notions and things for   fantastic look at all the greens and dark blue
fringe trim fantastic fantastic Thank you so   much Kimmie thank you so much Kimmie It’s It’s
just fantastic It is just wonderful Thank you Well welcome to the farmyard of the chateau
de colombe this now is completely transformed   already It’s fantastic We’re not at the end
of the transformation but this is gorgeous   It’s really amazing cuz everything was overgrown
or just just wrong we had we had ivy and trees   that shouldn’t be here and now it is camellia
So it’s a camellia in the center which they   grow quite tall and they bloom very early so we
have like March April we have beautiful camellia   flowers and then it’s hydrangeas will bloom
which will bloom in the summer and stay all   the way through the fall and it’s so fantastic to
see this and those two poor hydrangeas were with   us because we bought them last spring meaning
the spring of 2024 so they we we did keep them   alive but it wasn’t quite fair so they don’t look
like they are terribly strong but they will   come grow cuz we know in in two to three years
they are this tall and very full and then have   fantastic flowers and we have pale pinks or
rose colors then we have hot pink we have blues   we have multicolor we have purples and it goes
all the way along here and it’s so fantastic this doesn’t look like anything right I mean
because it’s so small give this two years and it   will be about this tall and full of flowers It’s
really fantastic That camellia will still give us   one more flower It’s there I mean the bud is
there it’s coming and by the way this   is the access to these were the bulls those
were the hefers so this is where they would be fed   so people could I mean the grooms that they
would come in here farm hands would come in here   and from here feed each side so we have either a
lot of potential for animals or to make this into   like almost like a reception area so where where
people can come in here and feed people left and   right so it’s up to whatever we come up
with Um again camellia camellia hydrangeas and   these are actually starting to bloom this is
it’s a very pale pink and we in the future want   to use the camellia for flower cutting flowers
for the chateau and that’s going to be really   really nice now of course the camellias can be
cut as well but they will usually be worn on   your lapel These two have survived the winter with
last year and winter with us too So they are a bit   a little look a little meager but they will come
It’s now that that camellia when you look at   this all of this growth I mean it’s finally it’s
in the ground after a year and it’s like exploding   how amazing is that and then we have this part
here pale pink already in bloom and the pale blue   coming soon I mean it’s you see the tips already the hydrangeas and the camellia in here I   thought would be a goner It was this really
did not like to be in in the pot for a year   and a half but it actually started growing
again so I think we’re going to be good and   there will be more hydrangeas coming on the
old vasherie where the our milk house well it’s   not our the milk house at the chateau used to be
it’s a huge space we’ve never shown that really   and never explored it with with you but we will
in the future and we have a huge roof here so in   order to water all of this we’re going to put a
water tank here so we can collect the rain water   we have to repair the gutters of course like
we have to do pretty much everywhere but   then there will be a big tank so we can
water all of this without using any additional   water Now soon we will have chickens and Stuart
calls them my chickens let’s have a look at that this used to be a dog run and well originally
that was for cows that were just ready to be   separated from their mothers so they would be in
this part of of the the cow shed or the vasherie   and then one of the grandsons of the baroness
turned it into a dog run cuz he would work but   the dog could be outside inside had water and
food all day long that is going to be our first   chicken run and tracy had clean has cleaned this
out It’s amazing I need to show you one thing So all the way in here you can this is where cows would be or bulls would be
just tied up so they could be dealt with whatever   you want to do or need to do with them now
that wall had had collapsed long before we   bought the chateau that is something we
want to fix this summer or this fall that we   rebuilt this wall all the way to the proper
height and I think we’re going to we decided   to start with what four four chickens yeah five
maybe and we have in here not quite ready for chicken all right there we go It needs to get warm It needs to be oiled again Not enough light But this we have
to put up some more chicken wire and then   this is a completely safe area especially
at night so foxes and badgers will not be   able to get in here so the chickens are
safe overnight and this barn here or the   vasherie is over 500 years old So it’s not
meant to be for chickens but hey why not right so the the progress in in in the barnyard is
absolutely amazing and there are things we need to   do this summer like fixing two or three areas
of the roof over there fixing a lean-to however   now that we have figured out how to do roofing
work that is it’s going to be work but it’s not   a big deal so in it’s really it’s really amazing
of course we have the swallows flying around here   we have so many birds singing loving that that
they have this that we planted a lot of flowers   and of course the the pollinators loving it
too so we we planted so many flowers so it’s   this chateau has changed in the or the gardens have
changed tremendously in the last 3 years now you   might think well it’s not much to look at no
not now but give us 2 years and we’ll show it   to you again and you’re going to go that looks
pretty nice so welcome to the farmyard of the chateau If you enjoyed this video please

  1. The farmyard court is going to be so beautiful when those flowers are in bloom. The vision is there. And what a lovely spot for chickens!

  2. Patrick, every time I see you go along in your tractor, I feel like singing, Green Acres is the place to be!😂 I think I love your tractor as much as you do.
Guys, the plants and garden are going to be spectacular. In two years, they will be grown well.
All of that material is stunning. You will create many beautiful things with them.
I look forward to the chickens. 😂❤

  3. Love those old buildings so much history attached to them. The chickens are going to be very happy living in the courtyard. Eggs every day what a life ❤

  4. Those fabrics are amazing, what a wonderful gift. Thank you Kymmie.
I have always wondered if those farm buildings were included in your Chateau so my question has been answered. There are so many outbuildings and so many possibilities. Looking forward to watching you renovate them. Have a good week x

  5. I noted you have a lot of elderflower you should do some cordial, not that you have enough to do, but it is handy to have some, very refreshing 😊

  6. The Fabrics are lovely , loved the last one but they are all pretty . Funny thing i have just saved 3 Roosters and now have 7 Hens too wanting a few more to get to 12 hens but i love having them . 🐔🐓🐓🐣🐥

  7. Yes you two are the best…what a lovely treat..fabrics! I love that fabric…blinds? ottomans? A covered bed head? Blinds with a small pleated edge and tassels!,, You both will be very busy.
I wish l didn’t live in Melbourne l would make you cushions from the fabric!
When l was 10 there was a dressmaker at the end of our street, and she would invite me every week to sort through her fabric..l would bring lots home…Bliss! Enjoy. 🤗🤗🌳🌳🌳🌳💐

  8. That sky blue
Iris! I'm so envious! Plants that are waiting patiently to go in are classed as 'In the bullpen.' You will know what that means. like you I have some from last year. I even had a rhubarb in a pot, I called it aa bonsai. It waited for 5 years. When it finally found it's spot in the garden, it took off like a rocket. Enjoy being outside.

  9. What a gift!

  10. I enjoyed the video sooo much, planting and cleaning I like.the material is very pretty.Patrick you are an expert on the tractor 😁🥇❤️🥇💛🆒🌻love from Kansas 🇺🇸🥰🇺🇸🥰🇺🇸🥰🇺🇸

  12. What a nice gift you got there are really some amazing fabrics in it. Also I love your farmyard and I vote for animals in the old feeding area hehe. But what any you do the lady of you will smile as you bring back the life into it. Can't wait to see more 🍀🍀👍👍❤❤

  13. Just beautiful, blooming flowers already and more to come👏. Such a nice gift of upholstery fabrics and trims. Very rich designs, can’t wait to see them in place.

  14. Gorgeous materials and other accessories your very blessed. Thanks for showing us around and you have a perfect chicken coop and run ❤

  15. I love the fabrics. I haven't been able to find Damask like that near where I live. Get some goats, they will take care of weeds.

  16. What an incredible collection of fabrics! They are timelessly classic and absolutely beautiful. I know you're going to create wonderful things with them.

However, I've noticed something while watching your channel over the past year. Your central courtyard still seems unfocused, and the fountain area feels undefined. Since it creates the first impression for your guests, it currently looks a bit neglected.

  17. How thoughtful and kind of Kymmie to gift you some wonderful fabrics. You are making great progress in the grounds. Well done. ❤

  18. My Darlings, I love what you have all accomplished with the farmyard. When matured it will be lovely. Can't wait to see what you do with all that fabric Patrick! I also love the pink and green combination….so excited! 😂 Sending you and your furbies lots of love. ❤❤

  19. I have watched your channel from the start and enjoy it tremendously. I wanted to comment on the great progression you both have made through all of your hard work and dedication. Additionally, congratulations on the obvious success you both have made with the commitment to trimming down!! Well done .

  20. As a sometime member of the “tough love” school of gardening, I can relate to “extended” planting schedules 😉 – amazing how well plants survive even so (I offer sincere apologies when I finally do get them in, which probably helps). Yours look happy and ready to thrive. 🌺 Love the planting scheme and congrats on taking back the farmyard! 🙌

  21. This was a great vlog, I can see ideas bursting from your mind. Your Chateau has so many wonderful possibilities. Great job you guys.
All of that wonderful fabric! Lucky you!

  22. beautiful introduction again, you have treasures there with all the fabric, wow!!i also love the idea to have chickens!!!

  23. May I mention that you have beautiful hair my favorite was when you had a short pony tail I think when you first moved in likely much cooler in the summer 😅 wish I could hire 4 helpers for you two …

  24. Your flowers ant the beginning of the videos are more beautiful every week – the colors are so intense. ♥️♥️♥️
What a kind gift of beautiful fabrics. You have so many projects in your future, I’m sure that whatever you don’t use right away will find a home at some point. As my friend Trudi’s mom would say, “It doesn’t eat.” (It’s OK to use it later.)
Wow, huge progress in the farmhouse courtyard! Great idea to use the stone as mulch and weed suppression. When I was landscaping out front at my place last year, I found broken clay pots or pipe or something, and glacial morain stones, so used them as my mulch around the boulevard tree. It works great for holding in moisture.
I love your plans for the plants along that “new” courtyard. I know it’ll look lovely as it fills in.
Good luck with your chickens! I’m sure you heard about Stephanie’s… your plans look solid, and perhaps you’re planning a mesh roofed section by the rebuilt stone wall, so that they can wander out safely during the day when you’re not there for supervision.
So great that you can tackle some roof repairs on your own, to ensure your buildings stay safe. ♥️♥️♥️

  25. It is going to look beautiful when all the plants are established. Lots of flowers to cut and do displays for your Gites and guest rooms and of course your main living rooms. It is really looking transformed from when you purchased the property. I love all the fabric you opened. I can see you at the table making curtains, cutting out pieces to reupholster furniture, Patrick you are going to busy at your sewing machine. Ronnie in Saskatchewan

  26. You certainly are having a beautiful spring show of your roses. Do you know the names of your roses? Some look like roses from David Austin. I just had my DA bloom in gusto about 2 weeks ago in Oklahoma City USA. They have been fertilized again for their next show in a month. I loved the fabric and goodies you were given. I know you will make good use of your gifts. Take care.
