When it comes to our lawns, it can be difficult to know just what to do to make them look amazing year after year. One simple task, done once every three years, will leave your green space looking “thick and dense”. The experts at Lawntherapy have highlighted the importance of overseeding.
This is the process of spreading new grass seed over your lawn, which thickens the grass and means there is a lot less space for weeds to grow. This differs from the process of overseeding, as overseeding introduces new grass species into your garden, while reseeding involves growing grass from scratch on bare soil.
The lawn pros recommend overseeding every three years, adding that this should be carried out in spring, although late summer and autumn are the best times for this task.
They said, “If you want your lawn to stay thick and dense, then overseeding at least every three years is recommended.”
When it comes to overseeding, it’s important to opt for grass seeds that are suitable for the particular conditions that your lawn faces.
The experts note that a shade-tolerant seed mix should be used in a shady garden, while a hard-wearing mix will be the best choice for a garden that has high foot traffic.
A step-by-step guide for overseedingStart by mowing your lawn to a height of 15mm, as this will allow the new grass seedlings to receive enough sunlight, according to the experts at LawnsOne.Rake the lawn and remove any debris, such as leaves and dead grass.Aerate the soil by creating small holes, as this will help the seedlings establish roots. Then, use a speed spreader to distribute the seeds evenly. For the best results, the experts recommend doing this at a rate of 30g per square metre. After seeding, water the grass immediately, ensuring you keep the soil moist until the seedlings are well-established.
After overseeding has been completed then ensure that you are regularly watering the grass, with the pros suggesting to do this twice a day. Once the grass is at least three inches tall, you can do the first mow, ensuring you remove only the top third of the grass blades.
