Since I've been scrolling this subreddit it has got me thinking, is this soil good for growing pothos? I just picked up soil from teh garden and planted in that. It gets very muddy when I water it and it completely hardens up after drying.

No, it’s got too much clay in it. You need to buy some actual potting soil for indoor plants
I’d really recommend getting a potting soil,
Or some amendments like adding organic matter(compost, leaves, mulch, worm castings) soil that turns to clay or solid like this wont be suitable for growing much other than very hardy plants long term especially in a Shallow pot like this where the whole things turns solid in likely a couple hours after watering.
The soil in my lawn was exactly like this before I added all the amendments I could for my garden. It made a huge difference.
I don’t think this soil is good for growing anything
That is dirt. Soil has living organisms in it. That is clay dirt.
It really does depend on all conditions that you provide it with, and the same is applied to all plants.
Pothos is a tropical plant, coming from rainforests, so it likes warmth, good light, and soil that is drying fast. If it’s drying fast in your climate, it’s good. If your climate is more moderate or even cold and it dries slow, you need to change to chunky (add bark, perlite, things like that). It also needs nutrients, so any kind of soil or compost added to the mix will be good for that.
At this point I really believe pothos could grow on the moon. It’s unkillable
You’re more likely to build a house with this material.
No. Also, just digging up soil from outside introduces disease and pests. Potting soil is made to have a different texture than soil from your garden, so that popped plants can retain water while still being free draining.
Lol stick it in the oven and make a new pot out of it
Is it from mars?
you’re probably better off making a new pot out of that clay.
No
This surely is a troll post?
That is mud/dirt, not soil
Had to double check, how is this not a cj post
Thats a rock babe
that soil is good for making a bigger pot to plant the pothos in when it gets larger.
“Is this soil any good?” *Shows us a block of clay*
My friend, indoor plants have special necessities, you can’t just take the soil from your backyard and expect that your indoor plants will love it
I think thats for making pottery
I have clay soil for my entire yard. Nothing can grow to its full potential in this stuff. House plants would would eventually die from root rot from trying to keep the clays moisture level correct for the plant. Roots can’t spread out like they should with good soil. Just buy some potting soil, sand, and peat and make your own blend of soil.
