Need your opinions on what is causing my grass to go brown / yellow here. I'm in Southern Ontario. I water with an irrigation system so, I've increased the amount of time on this zone from 45min to 90min effective yesterday, to see if that improves the color. Have not experienced this in prior years… At least certainly not in May. It has been cooler and we have had some rain recently.

Thanks for any comments and suggestions!

What type of soil? 90 minutes in one go is insane to me.

Well it’s possible that you aren’t getting much soil absorption there, but fungus is more likely if you are watering that much. Have you tried soak and cycle? Where you water in increments to allow the soil to absorb the water and create less runoff?

Grub damage? I had 2 yellow spots like this last fall and it ended up being grubs. If the turf pulls up easily it’s a clear sign.

Is it possible there’s a huge rock buried there and the ground is more shallow? Of course, meaning that section dries out faster…

You can start digging right now, there is a huge boulder there.

I had some thing similar, I thought it was my dog preferring to pee there all winter. But now I suspect when the roofers were doing work, their tarp suffocated it

Do you have a cesspool? Reason I asked is because it looks similar to what’s happening to mine. I think is my cesspool.

Where does your gas line run? It could be leaking gas
It’s not grubs, wring time of year for that.
Fungus? Need a closer picture of the blades of grass.
    Rocks under the soil? Possibly.

Any smell of gas? Same thing happened to me. Gas leak.

How do you keep the grass from invading on the left?

  11. This happened to my mom’s grass. She went to a gardening center they tested her soil and told her that her grass had too much nitrogen. It started appearing in one strip but over time she began to have a lot of yellow grass. They also told her it occurred because we had a very rainy season.

I’m in southern Ontario as well. This could just be due to the lack of sunlight we’ve had this spring. I think all the people saying start digging that’s a bit invasive and excessive. I’d say wait it out and see what happens into mid June.

Have you sprayed any herbicides recently? Something in a bucket you threw out? Salt during the winter?

Did you get any professional rug cleaning done recently?

Are those two trees next to each other in the front next to the roadway?

  16. Possible grubs dig down below the grass about 4”. Or just hit it with grub x and watch

I don’t think it’s a boulder like everyone is saying.

    It’s actually two boulders.

  18. Lol yeah..if the lawn don’t grow it’s a rock or a path.

  19. If that spot has been green in the past, someone put a bolder when you weren’t looking.

  20. Is there a slight hill there or uneven ground? What are the chances that you’re mowing that area shorter than the rest due to the mower bottoming out?

Another idea is that you’re getting a ridiculous sun reflecting off of a window cooking your grass.

    Not to mention grubs.

Have you checked for infestations like army worms ( I never get their name right) or grubs?

  22. BraveAbbreviations69

Perhaps some light is reflecting there too strong?

How much rain are we talking about? Is it possible that that area is a low spot in the lawn and pools water with frequent rain showers. If so, It can cause the grass in that section to suffocate/drawn.
