This marks a third gold for the Kerry gardener at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show, which he previously won in 2021 and 2023.

This year, the owner of Kells Bay House and Gardens in Kells, in Cahersiveen, claimed gold for his Wilde Kells Bay ferns display.

Speaking to RTÉ Radio One’s Morning Ireland, he said he was “elated as always” when he found out about claiming victory.

“I worked very hard with my head gardener, Greg, for the last nine days,” he said.

“It’s a bigger stand than ever before, but when I came in at 7am to see the gold medal, it was all worthwhile,” he added.

His stand, Wilde Kells Bay, is 120 square metres – four times the size of his first display in 2018.

“I thought I had bitten a little bit more than I could chew on Thursday, [it] was very stressful, but we got there in the end.”

He added that the stand is a “microcosm” of his Kells Bay gardens in south Kerry.

“I’m standing here in the middle of it in what is called the primaeval forest, with a couple of bog pools below me and large tree ferns surrounding me, with a bed of sphagnum moss and woodland ferns all around me,” he said.

The former banker said winning a third gold is “very fulfilling” and is always a “challenge”.

“My friends ask me: ‘Why do I go back after I’ve got a couple of golds already?’, but it’s the challenge. It’s a very nice place to come to.

“There’s a great community here with the RHS, they throw on a great show, and it’s great meeting the people that appreciate it.

“And of course, this is good for business, so we hope to see lots of visitors to Kells Bay House and Gardens this summer,” he added.

He said the logistics of transporting the display from Kerry to London are “still very challenging with Brexit paperwork and the costs involved” but he has gotten “more used to them”.

Mr Alexander and his team loaded a 40ft container ten days ago in Kells Bay House and Gardens in Kerry and drove it to London, arriving 48 hours later.

“When we got all the ferns out of the 40ft in fairly good health, we knew we were looking good for a good display,” he added.

The event is open to the public and runs until Saturday, May 24.
