Looks like mold to me. Maybe you can peel off the decaying moldy old leaves at the base? I’m not sure if it’ll completely fix the problem tho.

  2. Context: my roommate has had this plant for a year maybe? All she does is water it (not sure how frequent, but i feel it’s too much). I think it’s molding? I will change the soil today, but is there anything else I should keep in mind?

I suspect root rot: the stem looks squishy 😬

It looks like it’s dying from the roots up. Plants can fool us because they continue to put out new growth at the top while they are struggling at the bottom.

You’ve got to check the roots to see if there’s any thing viable at this point.

If you’re going to try and rescue it I do not suggest pulling the two of them apart, if in fact there are two of them. Your best bet is to pull it out as gently as possible, shake some of that soil off and repot with fresh dry soil, in a small container. The one it’s in is probably fine.

Don’t be worried about it having infected soil or anything like that. Getting it adequate light and controlling moisture is most important right now.

I accidentally let a ZZ rot, but there was no visible mold. Assuming the plant was done for, I pulled out the rotting stems and put the seemingly empty pot outside. For months, throughout a Texas summer. Then some rain came. The plant grew back and I have another ZZ now.
