TLDR; Indirect morning sun, hasn't been watered in like 5 days, but soil hasn't gotten any less moist.
Hello friends!
Hydrangeas are my wife's favourite flower & I got these for her a couple weeks ago. They were being quite dramatic at first, but after I found out how thirsty they are & their lack of drought tolerance, they were doing great! Like better than either of us thought they would.
I don't think they're being dramatic now, I think I did something wrong. We keep them out of direct sun & leave them on the dining table where they can get indirect morning sun. I also gave them a bit of plant food when we put them in a pot with drainage.
I was watering them every other day or so & they kept perking right back up after a few hours. I haven't waterred them in ~5 days, & the soil has stayed moist the whole time. There's no excess water at the bottom of the pot. My wife comes back into town tomorrow & I don't want them to greet her like this. Any guidance or support would be much apprteciate, thank you all in advance 🙂
For clarify, I did not buy my wife, that's illegal. I bought her these flowers.

Are you sure the soil is still moist? Because they just look thirsty. But I could be wrong I guess I never had hydrangeas.
Oh no, hydrangeas can be drama queens! If the soil’s still moist after 5 days, they might be overwatered or the roots need air. Check for root rot and let the soil dry a bit before watering again. You’ve got the light right, bright, indirect is perfect. Trim dead parts and maybe repot if needed. Hang in there, your wife will love it!
How long ago did you repot them? Seeing the picture before reading anything, my first thought was that the pot is too small. Even if you put them there when you first got them, it could just be catching up to them now.
I worked in the floral industry
2 things:
Your hydrangea needs more water from the bottom. But to revive the blooms, take the plant and turn it flower side down into a bowl of cool water. Submerge the hydrangea flower first for about 15 mins or so. Don’t wait on this, do it right away or you’ll lose these blooms. They will plump right up again. Make sure to water at the base also and by god…give this plant some better light!
Honestly hydrangeas do not do well in pots. They have huge root systems and do much better in the ground. That pot looks like it’s way too small for it, but hard to judge from a photo. It needs to be like 20” wide and super deep. They need very well draining soil and it’s probably water logged if the soil has been wet that long.
Have you tried watering it
Put them outside
For starters, when the leaves start to droop they are thirsty. Water them with lukewarm water.
I didn’t think hydrangeas liked to be inside, they get really huge and have big roots, I imagine for a small time they could be inside, but I think those guys need a bigger pot at the very least and then maybe more water.
What? Submerging the blooms? They don’t have the ability to take in water. Plants can only take in water from the roots, there’s no other way for them to get hydration.
Flowers will die, that’s natural. The problem here is that the leaves look dehydrated, this means it needs more water.
Hydrangeas are not a plant that does well indoors in a pot. They need a lot of bright, direct light outdoors. They do need a lot of water, but when they’re indoors and not getting enough light roots will be damaged and can’t take up water.
Hydrangeas can be tricky, they want a ton of water, but also a ton of drainage. I’ve never seen them do well in a pot… or as a houseplant at all, to be honest. Though I’m sure someone out there has the perfect conditions in their home to make it work.
Most of the Hydrangea’s flowers are actually Sepals, a modified leaf, with almost unnoticeable fertile floral portions at the center.
And their color is strongly influenced by soil ph!
Hydrangeas usually love water so probably needs more water where the roots are at
Sending solidarity mine looks just like this
Needs real light, put it outside in a bigger pot
water it, it will puff up. the soil isn’t as moist as you think. but replant asap.
Lots of water! And they are outdoor plants. They need planting in the ground. They are very thirsty plants and don’t like to dry out at all.
Plant outside (or in a large pot outside) and cut the flowers off at the base.
