Kyogle gardener Peter Constable was presented with the Anne Williams Clark Medallion this week – an award designed by Garden Clubs Australia.

Kyogle Garden Club president Geoff Densley and mayor Danielle Mulholland presented the medal to Peter –  the award goes to someone who demonstrates an interest in horticultural gardening and is active within the local gardening community.

Peter has been involved with the Kyogle Garden Club for more than 10 years.

With his wife Mary Constable, he became interested in gardening from visiting Open Gardens in other districts.

“We were runners-up a couple of times,” Peter said about the Open Garden comp.

Peter said he was into growing orchids and he had “a large quantity.”

In the garden, he is relaxed about how it evolves.

“We buy plants we like and find somewhere to put them,” he said.

Peter and Mary started and ran the Flower & Foliage Show in Kyogle for five years.

As part of the Kyogle Garden Club, Peter runs Open Gardens. He also goes into schools to give gift vouchers for school garden comps.

The garden club has three separate committees and Peter is on all of them.

The Kyogle Garden Club has about 100 members. Anyone interested in joining can attend meetings on the fourth Thursday at the Kyogle Bowling Club at 9.30am.

The medallion is named after Anne Williams Clark was an American who came to Australia and served as a nurse in World War II. She was captured by the Japanese and when released went to Sydney. There, she set about creating garden clubs across Australia.
