Gardener’s World star Monty Don teased fans that there are going to be some very special visitors to his Chelsea Flower Show Garden on the VIP launch day on Monday, May 19. The horticulatural legend has never created a garden for the legenary annual event, before but was tempted by the fact he was invited to create a dog friendly space. With that in mind, he admitted his own dog Ned would be making a special appearance at the gardening event.
Alongside many other celebrities dogs who are visiting the space, his furry friend will have a family reunion. Speaking on The One Show, he told hosts Roman Kemp and Alex Jones: “Here’s the other thing, Ned’s mother and sister, who he’s never seen since I took him away at eight weeks old are also going to be there.” Monty and his wife Sarah brought the adorable golden retriever home in October 2022.
The gorgeous pooch has become a favourite with fans thanks to his appearances on Monty’s various gardening shows. The garden Monty has created will be moved to Battersea Dog’s Home following the five-day show.
Following the opening event, this year showwill run from Tuesday, May 20 to Saturday, May 24. Explaining the concept of the garden which has been fully designed with canines in mind, he said one key thing he wanted was to be aware of not having straight paths as that is not how dogs walk.
He explained: “The whole thing is, I have been an organic gardener for so many years and I beat the organic drum. We should encourage wildlife and all the rest of it.
“Traditionally, mowing a tight lawn is pretty restrictive, I quite like lawns but… I’ve said from the beginning, this is a garden where dogs play, they make a mess, maybe a little terrier digs a hole, there’s balls there.
“So you can’t have an immacualte golf green lawn, it’s got to have a life and be lived and that’s what it is. The simplicity is in the idea, it’s a garden for people who love gardens and love dogs, that’s the story, there’s nothing else to it.
“In making it, it’s just about the most complex thing I’ve ever done in my life but there we are, the idea is simple,” he said.
