So today we’re going to talk about Kufias because we love hummingbirds and we have them all over here and the hummingbirds absolutely love these flowers. And since sometimes it’s hard to find the different varieties, I started buying them online. Though check your nursery out to see if they get them in and make sure you’re getting the ones that have the tube flowers that look like cigars because that’s the ones they really like. These flowers really seem to attract hummingbirds. Now here’s the three how they came pack from Walmart. I believe this comes from their nursery. That’s not a bad price. Three of them for a little over $20. They were packed well. It took about a week to get here. They look a little dry. Let’s get them unwrapped, look at them, and see how they do in the next few days. Sitting in a box for a week could dry them out. And they really don’t look damaged. So, the packing was really good. They have them in plastic bags. And then you can see there’s a rubber band around them. Now, these are nice and tall. Technically, if I wanted to cut them down, I could have like close to another dozen plants here, but I’m not going to touch them right now. No propagating on these for the moment. I like the idea of buying them from the Walmart website, and it said that you could return them to the store if there was a problem. I have a little more security that way. And this nursery was called the National Plant Network. Now, I’ve already bought from the Walmart website. It came from Winter Greenhouse instead of Walmart. It was third party, but look at them. That’s the pink cigar already repotted. I’ve had them here for a few weeks. They look beautiful. And then the other one in the back, I’ll show you that is called the firecracker. Both came from winter greenhouse. I’ve got the video up. They were packed gorgeously. And now I’ll be doing cutings and propagating off of that very soon. And I’ll take you with me on that. Slightly different color. See, this one doesn’t have the kind of reddish brown tip as much as the other one, though. You never know. It could end up being almost the same one with a different common name as Walmart calls theirs cherry bells. Now, this is what I use to pot a lot of my geraniums in. It’s just a potting soil with some soil that came out of other totes that are growing other vegetables and stuff in. And then I add in a little bit of sand, play sand that’s real cheap to buy, and kitty litter. It can only be the clay ones. Now, I decided to get these repotted the next day because they just seem to be drying out too fast. And those are the pots I’m using, not the bottoms. You I did a video on that. I took the bottoms off because it retains too much water. That’s not good for the plants. You want good drainage for these plants. They’re drought tolerant plants. Though they will need good watering, they don’t want to be sitting in water. And now you can see they were rootbound and that’s why they were so dry. So now let’s get them repotted. I’m putting the soil in with the empty pot inside. Pressing it really good. I’ll take the pot out, drop my plant in, and I’m done. Can’t get easier than that. I’m going to read you the product details from Walmart. Offer contains three cherry bells, Kufia plants in two and a half inch grower containers. Mature size is 1 to 3t tall and 1 to 3t wide. Best grown in USDA hardiness zones 8 through 11, but will perform well in all zones as an annual. Super saturated orangey red blossoms. Blossoms early spring through fall. Heat tolerant, great for container planting, attracts pollinators, lowmaintenance, and easy to grow. Hummingbird watchers rejoice, this vivid cherry bells kufia is sure to attract some new visitors to your yard. Cherry bells is a pollinator magnet with small cigar-shaped blossoms that adorn the entire plant in a prolific orangey red blossoms. Their trailing habit makes them perfect for hanging baskets, window boxes, and patio containers. These long blooming annuals love the heat and continue to bloom when other plants are fizzling out. Lowmaintenance, drought tolerant, and easy to grow. This is the next day. I brought them in for the night, but look at the leaves. They’re already changing. I was afraid they weren’t. They were all dried out. They are beautiful now. So, these three plants for $20 should work out really well. I could theoretically take cutings from them right now, but I’m just going to leave them alone. I’m going to have lots of plants from this one. But these are gorgeous. Yeah, I’m I’m just myself amazed how beautiful the leaves have popped up. They were looking almost like they were going to turn into dried up paper. Look at the flower. See, there’s the flower. Gorgeous. All right, that’s them. And I’m very pleased with them. So, it’s been about 10 days now, and I’m going to tell you, the flowers are doing great. The plants are doing great, and the hummingbirds love them. Here, they grow for years. I’ve got some plants that are over 3 years old. So, if you’re in a cool area, make sure you put them in a pot and bring them in the shelter for the winter. But here, they’re perennials. They are not annuals. I love them. The birds love them. And well, as you can see, all I have to do is sit them somewhere and the hummingbirds find them. Is this not adorable? They are really starting to take off. So, pretty soon I will do propagating. I love them. I hope to get more varieties of these type of kofias. I can just sit here and watch them all day. And that’s a little house finch drinking from the pizza tray. I put that out for the orioles because they come in and I’m trying to lure some of the orioles away from the hummingbird feeders because the hummingbirds are not pleased with them. But the house finches have found it and they said, “Oh, this tastes good.” So, they’re drinking, too. So, I hope I gave you some thoughts and ideas of maybe buying online if you can’t find it in your local nursery and keep the hummingbirds happy. With that, have a wonderful day and don’t forget to eat what you grow. Bye-bye. So, a couple weeks ago when I got the other two, the first ones, the pink cigar and the red firecracker, there was a broken branch in there. It was all dried up. I did put it in here with some rocks. I don’t think they’re going to make it. Maybe the one that’s still green will, but we’ll get into propagating properly, so you’ll have much more success than taking a dried out branch.

  1. We've had the firecracker planted in the ground. We planted it years ago & found it grows well in ENC. The plant goes dormant and comes back every year.

  2. Cuphea are some of my favorite plants. I have 2 types this year and wanted to know if you’ve had success with growing them indoors. The heat here in summer (Phoenix Arizona 9b) is too intense and they’ve always died. I’d like to see if they’ll survive indoors for the summer.
Thanks for your videos – they’re always amazingly timely!

  3. Thanks for sharing, Robbie! I have a Lavender Lace cuphea that I bought on sale very late last summer (and wasn't sure it would survive). It wintered outside here in zone 9b, and has started blooming this spring. 🪻

I only bought it because I saw it was a cuphea and you so often explained how those were some of the hummingbirds favorites.

  4. Sorry to be off the subject But Can you do a video of what you do with the strawberry plants runners? I have one so far. And I been watching video and they are all different.

  5. Thank you for the information. What is your favorite 5 or 6 hummingbird plants. Would love to see a presentation on those also. Thanks.

  6. When I tried to click on the flower links, it took me to some wrapping paper so the links might be bad. Just wanted to give you transparency.

  7. I have already used your example of building soil around the empty pot, removing the pot then pop in the plant in the vacant space. Great idea Robbie. 😀

  8. I recently found your YouTube channel and might I say you’re the most interesting person 😊 I love your vlog and diy videos! And your commentaries!

  9. Thank you Robbie❤❤❤❤ and thank you for your videos and suggestions: much needed for newcomers like myself. God bless your heart ❤

  10. Hi Robbie, we live in FL. We have tons of squirrels – we are wondering- we never see squirrels in your videos. Do you ever get squirrels out where you are?? Really curious because you have feeders all over… LOL thanks

  11. We have been watching you for about 2 years. Thank you Thank you…..have learned so much. We are planting and using the tulle method for the first time this week. So excited not to have bugs eat the lettuce and bokchoy before we do!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Robbie, I doubt you’ll see this post, but I just turned on my PBS station and they are currently running a documentary called “Hummingbirds of Hollywood.“ It follows a lady named Terry Masear who rehabilitates hummingbirds. Maybe it’ll be available at some point in your area too? It’s PBS’ fundraising drive and they’re also offering it as a DVD, so maybe they will keep showing and plugging it here and elsewhere.

  13. My daughter got me on to those plants several years ago and the hummers really liked them. Mine grew quite tall and bushy. unfortunately don't have a place for them in the winter and they don't survive here

  14. How long are the cuttings you take for propagation, and do the mother plants’ stems bush out after you take cuttings? Will the plants grow indoors over the winter?
