With the warm weather set to continue this weekend, there is ample opportunity to visit some of Nottinghamshire National Garden Scheme’s open gardens in our local villages.

The types of gardens on offer this weekend is varied and contrasting, from a village cottage garden being redesigned by new owners to a nationally renowned plant nursery.

Visits to NGS events helps to raise money for the scheme’s nursing and caring charities, and last year £3.5 million was donated to our charitable beneficiaries, including Carer’s Trust, Marie Curie and Maggie’s.

This weekend, you can visit Hall Farmhouse, Gonalston on Saturday and Sunday, between 1pm to 5pm.

A recently acquired established cottage garden, Hall farmhouse has been imaginatively redesigned with three distinct areas with a riot of spring colours including wisteria, rhododendron, iris, alliums roses, ceanothus, bluebells and spring bulbs, as well as herbaceous borders and mature trees, including Paulownia Tomentosa, magnolia, ancient yew and apple trees.

An historic pond is being re-developed to attract wildlife.

Hall Farmhouse offers wheelchair access and is dog friendly, with plants for sale, refreshments, and card payments are accepted.

Also in our area, Norwell Nurseries will be opening their doors on Sunday as part of the NGS, located on Woodhouse Road, Norwell, between 2pm and 5pm.

The nationally recognised important plant nursery offers extensive gardens showcasing many different styles and innovative planting beds, with 3,000 different beautiful and unusual plants.

Featured in many gardening magazines and BBC Gardener’s World, the nursery itself will be open with over 1,500 different and rare plants for sale.

Norwell Nurseries offers wheelchair access, parking, plants for sale, and refreshments.

Elsewhere, 10 Harlaxton Drive, Lenton, will be open from 11.30am to 4.30pm which offers an imaginatively designed garden presented on three levels, separated by steep steps with handrails.

Also open is 6 Hope Street, Beeston, which is described as a “plant collectors dream” with collections of plants including alpines, bulbs, 60+ hostas, ferns, grasses, carnivorous plants, succulents, perennials, shrubs, trees, and a pond. This will be open from 1.30pm to 5pm.

The National Garden Scheme gives visitors unique access to some 3,500 private gardens in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, and raises money for some of the UK’s best-loved nursing and health charities through admissions, teas, and cake.

Last year, garden owners, volunteers and visitors saw donations of over £3.5 million.
