I estimate my yard (1.3 acres) is around 75% native. We're growing tomatoes, peppers, green beans, ground cherries, herbs, and cucumbers this year. The wildlife pond was completed about 15 months ago. Frogs/toads help with garden pests, and we're super excited to have dragonfly nymphs. There are some awesome volunteers coming up around the yard, too–red buckeye, Southern magnolia, muscadine grapes, ever expanding colonies of rhododendron maximum, etc.

I’m also in Atlanta, albeit a smaller yard and in a very urban neighborhood, but I have wondered what it takes to get certified by the city for this. Is there a list of rules/qualifications?

Can you give me an advice on the frog pond? Starting has always seemed kind of overwhelming for some reason.

  3. Any ticks? We’ve kept our leaf litter this year but honestly next year we may have to blow the leaves away from under our woodlands. The ticks are seriously too bad.
