After my mother unexpectedly passed away in March, I've now found myself the new owner of some houseplants I have no knowledge on.
I have no idea what these are, or what shape they're in. My only goal for now is to keep them alive – as I learn to care for them. Any help is much appreciated. Youtuber to follow for tips, recommendations on what these are, what lighting may be best.
I have cats, which is why they're on the porch until I do more research. TIA.
The only plants I currently have are heart shaped philodendron, golden pathos, and rick rack cactus. This is new territory to me lol

  1. Just commenting to say this is lovely. I have a plant that has survived several near death experiences with me, she gave me it approx 14 years ago!
The one at the back is unkillable, “ZZ plant” . Just don’t over water it but it literally would survive a nuclear war.
The pony tail palm on left is fun I have two nodes off the top of one I had that started to die. I over watered it and the trunk roots rotted. So I cut its hair off and now they live on as two ponytails in a pot happily.

One on the right no clue but looks fun!

i have all three of these, and mine thrive on a bit of neglect (i forget ’em for a week or two at a time). from left to right: ponytail palm (beaucarnea recurvata), raven zz (zamioculcas zamiifolia), and a wee ficus bonsai (ficus microcarpa). THAT SAID: only the ponytail is non-toxic to cats. i would regift the ZZ and the ficus or shelf them in an inaccessible area.

ETA: *most* importantly: i’m so sorry about your mother passing, especially unexpectedly. i hope the plants you keep gift you a bit of the life she poured into them.

I’m very sorry for the loss of your Mom. I inherited a snake plant when my Mom passed 44 yrs ago. That thing lived for another 25 yrs or so. Broke my heart. I hope you find comfort in caring for your Mom’s plants.

Hey so sorry about your loss. I lost my mother unexpectedly almost 11 years ago, and Mother’s Day is always tough. Hugs to you.

I don’t know anything about these particular plants, but I’ve had success with most of my houseplants by keeping them in indirect lighting near a window and watering once a week. Generally, you want the soil to be dry before you water again. These are very nice looking plants. Best of luck to you OP.
