I've put a second hand (third hand) greenhouse on my allotment. I dug a perimeter trench, levelled the surface and built a foundation with two layers of concrete bricks and morter.
The greenhouse base has a lip aound the edge which means the frame can't sit directly on the concrete so I've put it on a wood base which the frame sits around preventing movement.
However, I'm not sure this would be secure enough in high winds. I'd appreciate any advice on whether this should be fine or to fix greenhouse base to the wood?

The wood is screwed into the concrete.

For the sake of a few screws to secure it down is it really worth risking? I’d 100% be securing it as much as I could.

It looks sheltered from any strong wind by the trees/hedging.

But you can’t put a price on peace of mind.

It has to be secured to the foundation you built. Google ‘Green house broken after windy day’ 100s of pictures.

  4. As they are light they have a tendency to take off. Happened to me – high hedges on two sides but wind got under somehow and it ended up very mangled and the other side of the garden. On a place such as an allotment I would be careful of the damage they can cause to other people’s set ups too.

Yes, during a severe storm I once gained a free small greenhouse and trampoline. Not in usable condition

Yes, use concrete screws to fix the timber to the blocks. M8 x 80mm should do it. Two on each corner and one in the middle. Then, fix the frame to the timber using a suitable length wood screw. Washers might be advisable.

Mine is nailed directly into the concrete blocks that form the outline of the base. As a builder recommended, nailing into fresh concrete blocks is fine.

It’s been there in a windy location for over 20 years, even surviving Storm Darragh unscathed apart from the two perspex panels blowing out (the rest are glass), whilst trees nearby fell (one only just missed it).

Absolutely. This is your home now. You don’t want it flying away.

    Yes, and quite well.

I just used plugs and screws with washers on mine, then when it blew over in a storm I used more than 4…
