”The Subjective Lifespan” – I had a good year and a half with this Calathea lancifolia but, a few weeks ago, all its leaves started curling up and dying. Humidity was definitely not a problem: this plant lives in my bathroom where a hygrometer showed 80% immediately after my daily shower and 50-60% the rest of the day. Light and watering were in harmony; I had also repotted it a few months ago. I just kept the soil lightly moist as I bid farewell to each leaf (Image 2). I even bought a replacement – the plant on the left. Many would have discarded the plant at this point but I noticed some life among the debris: a few new stems were emerging! This is why I think house plants have a “Subjective Lifespan” – for some, a plant’s useful life is only as long as it is aesthetically pleasing.
