This was with the house when we moved with the tap already installed. It has a white residue inside which hasnt come off from pressure washing.

Theres no labels visible. Will it be safe to use as a water butt?

  1. I’d be hesitant to drink from it, but for watering pants sure.

Edit: What’s the problem here? I would happily launder my undercrackers in this.

  2. yeah, i have a few in my garden that were there when i moved in, been using the water on my houseplants for about four years and they seem perfectly happy

Those barrels usually come with distilled water in originally. When they don’t, it’s usually something water-soluble (acetic acid is a common one), and therefore easy to wash out. So you should be perfectly fine using it. We use them at our allotment, and nothing has ever been harmed by it.

  4. Looks like the barrels they use to transport oil in at fast food joints. No idea if suitable as a water butt.

Yes! One of my butts is a blue barrel just like this. Just keep the top covered to keep out leaves (or dozy neighbourhood cats), and add a small overflow to keep it neat if you like, too.

  6. Butt what about the white residue you ask?

    Should be fine I say.
