Jerusalem artichokes are more than just an edible tuber—they’re a hardy, multi-purpose plant that thrives in a range of conditions. These tough perennials can grow up to 3 metres tall, making them a great natural windbreak during summer, helping to protect smaller plants from strong winds.
One of the best things about them is how they come back year after year with almost no effort. They grow easily in temperate climates and adapt well to warmer, humid conditions like Queensland’s, making them a great choice for food forests and low-maintenance gardens.
I planted mine in light, well-draining soil, and they’ve thrived, producing their stunning yellow flowers. These bright blooms not only add colour to the garden but also attract beneficial insects like bees and butterflies, helping to support a healthy ecosystem.
Beyond their culinary use, Jerusalem artichokes offer garden benefits like acting as a windbreak and providing animal forage. Their vibrant yellow flowers add a burst of colour to the garden, and they are fantastic for attracting beneficial insects.
If you’re looking for a productive, resilient, and easy-to-grow plant, Jerusalem artichokes are a fantastic addition to any garden. Do you grow them? Let me know in the comments!
