Unknowingly, the cicadas’ songs are echoing in the breeze It’s another new season of growth These two 4’x8’ garden beds are our favorite spots in the garden But as you can tell, real estate here is a valuable asset So, the idea of expanding our “farmland” was born Since the backyard space is already quite developed We turned our focus to our entry courtyard, where there is a paved brick area We pass by this spot every day when we come home, but it has been left neglected Although we wanted to incorporate it into the overall front yard design But we never get the chance to start the design work So we thought, why not use it for the second phase of the vegetable garden for now 1. Better experience when coming home 2. More homegrown vegetables! Afterall, it is a good chance to do a deep cleaning here anyway This time, we decided to use elevated garden beds. So we don’t need to remove the brick paving underneath Two years’ worth of moss buildup was no joke We also took the opportunity to add more mulch In fact, It is recommended to add a layer every year It not only retains moisture but also effectively suppresses weeds Time to set up our elevated garden bed We ordered our DIY elevated garden kit from Vego garden The Garden bed measured 24″x48″x12″, around 8 cubic feet of volume The sheet steel feels solid and heavy-duty The legs raise the bed about 2 feet off the ground There are many reasons to choose an elevated garden bed— For us, the best part is not having to bend down while gardening It also improves drainage and soil aeration Compared to the cedar raised bed we built before— A properly coated metal bed can last for decades longer The corrugated base plate provides structural strength And the gaps allow excess water to drain easily Mobility is another big advantage It’s easy to relocate the bed if we ever redesign this area— Or move it to a spot with better light conditions for plants And honestly, anything on wheels is just more fun! With the 3 new elevated beds, we’re expecting about a 35% boost in production While figuring out soil amounts, we discovered an idea called “hugelkultur” It’s a German word meaning “hill culture” The method mimics how things naturally decompose in a forest First, a layer of brown materials—cardboard, branches, leaves, etc. We cut down the packaging cardboard boxes and used it as first layer A few months ago, we cut down a tree in the front yard The leftover logs are perfect. They decompose slowly and release nutrients over time And their porous structure helps retain water Next comes the organic layer We had two 5-gallon buckets of Bokashi compost ready from winter Filling half the bed this way saves a lot of soil To further enhance the nutrient cycle, some of our earthworms was on expat assignment to this new workspace We installed a few tool boxes for garden accessories here Bulkier items stay neatly on the lower rack I really love this cute magnetic Solar light We also took the chance to upgrade our watering system our old accessories has been quite beaten up and leaking everywhere Time for a fresh start! Last year, we got a hose reel to easily retract the hose— We loved it, so this year we went a step further with a self-retractable system Luckily, we already had a 4×4 post right next to the water bib A perfect spot to mount it Once you experience how smooth it is, it’s hard to go back to manual hoses I am afraid It’s time to transfer plants into the elevated beds We’re planning to grow berries, beans, root vegetables, leafy greens, and herbs Separate beds let you control soil conditions individually Blueberries prefer acidic soil, so we amended this bed accordingly We planted two blueberry bushes in the center, surrounded by strawberries And filled the remaining spaces with herbs Some supermarket potatoes had sprouted, so we planted them in the second bed The third bed is full of lettuce And we sowed a few bush beans right in the center Everything is ready—now it’s just a matter of time Before long, visiting this new growing area became part of our daily routine Every day, it feels like there’s something new to greet us Since it’s right by the front entry, we find ourselves stopping by more often than we need to Rain or shine Compared to our backyard garden this new spot benefits so much from being closer to the kitchen Someday soon, we’ll be able to see what’s ready to harvest just by looking out the kitchen window This new garden has also become a learning center for our daughter She’s been helping out with garden chores We have introduced her to our new “neighbors” Especially those “newborns”, which seem to be her age group Planting is a joy we cherish—one we’re eager to share with our daughter Watching things grow, seeing them come alive—there’s magic in it But it’s never just about Planting a garden— The lush memories, the earthy dreams, and fruitful joys All planted deep within our hearts
