IKEA has some of the absolute best outdoor solutions at great prices. Hi, I’m Shannon, the Daily DIYer. Now, I have to start by taking you to this awesome storage bin that worked super great on my outdoor patio last year. So, I am actually going to be walking you through a whole back porch makeover using mainly like 95% IKEA items, but these storage bins worked so great on our back porch last year that I wanted to throw this in here just so you could see where we started. And it’s still a great and affordable option if you’re needing some outdoor storage. So, you can see I have this console table. It was in the house for years. I didn’t need it anymore, but the back porch did. So, it made for a great little storage space back there. And these containers work perfectly for gardening supplies, pet supplies, kids tools. So, if you’re needing some storage like that, I would recommend these. However, I would also recommend doing this under a covered area. Um, because the hinges do have little spaces in there and could let in rain and moisture and things like that. But, these would be super great even in a garage. I think you’ll also appreciate that they have these little label areas on the front so you can take a Sharpie or a dry erase marker and write whatever’s in the bin on there to keep things extra organized. So, love these. Great deal. But like I said, we are going to be completely making over this back porch. So, I headed to IKEA again, grabbed two of these high shelves. They have two sizes. The smaller size is $19.99 and a larger, taller one is $24.99. And I picked up one of each. And now you know why this back porch needs a makeover. We’ve actually redone this decking twice now. And it is looking like a hot mess again. So instead of staining it, this time we’re going to use Deck Correct, which is a textured deck paint that is super durable and it’s grippy, which we really like that aspect of it, too. I’ll link that down below along with everything else I can possibly find um down in the description box below. So, now that we have the decking fixed, we are going to start building these shelves. My husband very much insisted that I use gloves to build it because these are metal shelves. So, let me tell you, I did start that way, but wow, they were such a pain that I just took them off and, you know, gambled my luck here. And they aren’t as sharp as you think, but still be super careful because these are all metal except for these little plastic feet that go on the bottom. So step one is adding those plastic feet to kind of protect the surface it’s going to be sitting on. And then there are four bars, one on each corner, and then shelves. So each one of these shelving units has a different number of shelves. Of course, the smaller one’s going to have three. And then the taller one, I believe, has five. And you’re just going to start screwing those screws into the corners and building this these shelves one at a time. So, here it is finished. Not too bad to build these. And I definitely had my assistant on hand in case I needed any help. Thumbs up for Honey, the furry assistant. Now that we got the smaller one done, I was ready to tackle that bigger one. And Honey was there to guide me through the whole process and give me a little bit of um reassurance as I went along. [Music] [Music] And my apologies here. I’m pretty sure I said five shelves on the taller one. It’s only four shelves. But still, this works really, really great. And Honey, I think approved, too. So once we got all of these together, I definitely wanted to see these upright and next to each other to see them as a unit, which is what I was picturing in my [Music] mind. All right, so loving the way these are looking already. And honey, it totally wore her out. I agree. IKEA building can be kind of a mental and physical game that you play. But I will say it is always worth it in the end once you get everything put together. And now it’s finally time to add these shelves to the back porch. Now, what I love about these shelves is two different things. The first thing is that they are metal. So, they are going to be great for the outdoors, withstand the weather, and they’re also compact. So, you can see we have a very small little kind of pushed in area on the porch. And these sat in there absolutely perfectly. And if you do not have this product in your junk drawer, your craft room, your garage, your tool box, you need to add it. I will link it down below for you. It is a constructiongrade double-sided adhesive that is permanent. It is super duper stuff. It comes in a roll and it comes in little precut strips. I’m going to be using those strips here shortly, too. So, hang on for that. But since I needed a larger length, I’m using the roll for this because we are going to take these shelves to the next level. Make them look nicer and also just give them a little bit more girth and usefulness with adding a piece of 1x 12 to the top of this. So, I’ve cut them down to size so they’ll fit on the top, sanded them, stained them, and then I love that double-sided adhesive because you just stick it on, stick your wood right on top. There’s no mess. There’s no dry time. You just stick it on and go. So, love the way this came together, but now we need to put all the fun things onto the shelves. So, I actually had one of these little green houses. We used it as a card collector at my daughter’s graduation party that last year. So, I had one of these on hand already. I was like, “This is perfect.” Actually used it as a greenhouse on here. And then I found this chalkboard at Dollar Tree for only $5. And I thought we’re going to do something fun with this next week. So, make sure to subscribe so you can come back and see what I do to this chalkboard. But a lot of people always ask me, “How do you hang things on your siding?” Well, you can find these really handy dandy little clips that don’t damage your siding. They slip up underneath each one of the siding um things. You can remove them. You can move them around. You can add more or less if you need them. Amazon find. I’ll link below. And I just use those to hang that chalkboard. And now we’re going to head back into IKEA. I love these hook systems. I’ve used them all over my house. Why not use one outside on the back porch, too? And I have a little hack for you. These baskets cost $13. I’m going to save you an arm and a leg. Don’t buy the baskets. I’ll show you a hack. First, let’s get this bar installed. [Music] [Music] So, first things first, you’re going to take the little mounting ends and install them onto the side. It comes with an Allen wrench to get those on there tightly. So, you’re going to do that on both sides. And then, I kind of decided I was going to also hang these instead of screwing them into the wall with those same siding hooks, except my rail was black. So, I needed to make those hangers black, too. And some black spray paint fixed that problem. And the way I’m going to hang this in a non-permanent way is just take some jute, put it through one of the holes on the bar, and then hung it from the hooks and cut off any of the excess jute. Voila. Just like [Music] magic. All right. All right, so now back to these baskets. They look really, really nice. I’m not going to knock them, but for $13, I really didn’t want to spend $26 as I wanted two of these. So, what we’re going to do instead is grab these hooks from IKEA. They come in a set of five for $3, I believe. And then I picked up two of these 79 cent metal buckets. And we’re just going to drill a hole right into the backside of each one of these and make our own little buckets that are going to hang off those hooks. [Music] [Music] Now, I love the look of baskets, but they don’t last very long outside unless you grab this one from IKEA. I love this one because it’s made out of more of like a plastic material and it has that plastic lining on the inside. So, it’s made for plants. So, finally able to get my basket look without, you know, having one that was destroyed by the end of the season. So, this one should last me for years. So, worth the $20 price tag on this one. And then I just had some fun accessorizing the rest of the shelves with some plants and some things that I already had, including a watering can, this little cute sign that I made. We love honeybees because of our dog, Honey. We made a whole honeybee themed porch one year, so this was left over from that. And then I would highly suggest grabbing this guy from IKEA for $4.99. It makes the perfect little garden tool caddy. You can use it for cleaning supplies, tools, and things like that, too. But I definitely used this a lot last year in my garden because I was easily able to just grab the handle, go off to where I needed to use it and just kind of throw things in it and grab things out when I needed. So again, this year it is going to go on the bottom shelf of this [Music] system. Another super affordable item I suggest grabbing from IKEA are these $1.99 shoe trays. They fit perfectly, the smaller size anyway, underneath these metal shelves. So, you can just kind of push it under, pull it out, put your dirty shoes on there. Great for when my husband mows the lawn so we can leave his shoes out there. And then clean it off and it can get pushed right back under. Now, we also needed a new doormat for the back door. And I don’t like to spend a lot of money on these. You’re just wiping your feet on them and they get tore up really easily. But IKEA has these for only $4.99. Then I thought we can dress this up and like make it a little bit more personalized with this freezer paper hack. So the first thing we’re going to do is measure our doormat. This one is about 24 in x 16 in. And if you want, you can cut your freezer paper down to that exact size. And then take a razor blade and kind of cut a design into the freezer paper. And then we’re going to use that as a stencil. And I’ll show you how we’re going to apply it to our doormat here in a second. Or if you have a vinyl cutting machine, you can even apply the freezer paper. You want the uh shiny side down, the rough side facing up. Cut that to the size of a larger size cutting mat and insert it into your cutting machine. Create a design on your Cricut program or your vinyl program and then send it through your machine. I did use the parchment setting on my Cricut machine to cut out this design. But again, if you don’t have a Cricut machine, grab out a Xacto knife and just cut your own design. Um, you can do that really, really simply. Now, what I like about my Cricut machine is that I’m going to get a professional look without a lot of time spent. So, if you’ve been going back and forth about getting a vinyl cutting machine, I use mine all the time for parties, celebrations, gifts, home decor, obviously going to make my own personalized backdoor mat. And it’s going to say positive vibes only. I love that. I thought that was so cute. I will have this in my Cricut Design Space. So, if you have a Cricut machine, you can click that link below and find this design there. Um, and the magic here is we are going to iron this freezer paper onto our doormat. So, remember I said you need to put the shiny side down. That is the side that is going to grab onto your doormat. You can see I actually did a really terrible job initially trying to center this thing, but it was no big deal. I peeled it back off and repositioned it and was able to reiron it back onto the door mat. You want to use a uh medium high heat, not a high heat, kind of somewhere in the middle, between low and high. So, medium, right? And start ironing it on. I would leave it on there for about 10 seconds and then move it over. Um, and once I got the full design on there, then I went back in and added all the like center pieces of the words um to make this all come together. And then to paint this, cuz like I said, this is our stencil, I’m going to use some trusty chalk paint from Walmart. I’ll link that down below for you. And a foam paint brush. So, a couple tips here. If you’re going to use this method, you want to go in with not too much paint to start. So, your first coat is going to be a light coat. And you’re going to dab up and down onto the stencil and onto your doormat. And basically, that is going to help seal the edges of your stencil down as it dries. And that’s going to give you a more crisp line when you go to remove your stencil. So, just be careful. This is not a stencil material and nothing is really going to grab on great to these doormats. So, if you’re really careful and you just kind of go slow, um you are going to get a really great finished result. Now, I did lose a couple of the center pieces, the E and part of the B there. But still, after about three coats, I was just really, really careful, let it dry, and then removed the stencil. And this is the most satisfying part. [Music] [Music] So, looking so so cute, right? Well, we’re going to make it more cute. Head back to IKEA. I love the layered rug look. So, this one was only $4.99. The perfect size to go underneath the doormat. So, I just laid that down and then layered that doormat right on [Music] top. So, the ultimate test here was does Honey approve? And I would say she she likes it. So, I think this was a total win here and only cost about $10. Now, we need a little bit of light on our back porch. So, I found the most fun way to do that using these planters, these hanging planters from IKEA. I grabbed two of them. And we’re going to install them onto the little hooks that already were on our back porch. And then also, these are faux plants. Being realistic here, right? These are all from IKEA, too, from a couple years ago that I already had. And then we’re going to add some puck lights in there. I got these from the Dollar Tree. a set of two of them for only $5. You can set them on timers or they come with a remote control, which I really, really love. So that way we can turn them off and on from inside or outside. And they look so cute during the day, but the magic obviously definitely happens at night. [Music] [Music] And here’s that big porch reveal. Now, this was before I had the rug done, but you get the idea. And like I said, I’m going to be doing a hack on that chalkboard next week. So, if you haven’t subscribed, make sure to subscribe. Hit the bell so you don’t miss next week’s video where I will share that hack. But this all came together so great. It’s organization. It has a spot for all my plants to be displayed. It has, you know, some funky vibes going on. I have my little herb garden up here, so it’s very close to our kitchen. I can just reach out the back door, grab some herbs, bring them into the kitchen really easily. Loving that. It just looks so much better. A lot of that has to do with the decking that we redid and then just taking everything off and starting over. And of course, with the help of all of those awesome IKEA finds. Now, we’re not done yet because I still have a couple more awesome IKEA outdoor hacks I want to share with you. This was just the finish of our back porch and patio, but I also wanted a really nice kind of plant stand or side table for our front porch. And these stools are only $4.99. Great price. Cheaper than you could even get at Dollar Tree. Love that. Here’s my amazing husband doing the picking for me in the warehouse. I don’t know what it is. You got to tell me down in the comments below. I love the smell of the warehouse. It must be all of the wood. The wood smell. It’s like going to the hardware store. I love it. But anyway, we are going to put this little stool together. This is an easy one. And there were only four screws and a bolt. And it only took about 5 minutes to put together. Hey, hey, hey. [Music] All right. So, here’s our stool all put together, and we’re going to start building this little side table. So, I have this wood round from Walmart. I’ll link it down below for you. And then remember, I said that tape comes in pre-made strips. Yep. We’re just going to use two of those and stick them to the top of the stool. You want to make sure you put them in the raised area because it kind of dips down in the middle and we want this to be able to grab onto that wood. So, you just stick it on, rub it, and then pull off the plastic topper. And you sit your wood round right down on top of it. So stinking easy. I mean, this is a 10-minute or less DIY. Now, I would suggest grabbing out some uh polyrylic or some clear matte spray, giving this a good coat or two so that way it’s all protected. You could even spray paint the whole thing if you wanted it a funky color. And then you just add your little accessories to the top. Maybe a little drink for you to enjoy plants on it if you want. That lantern, if you can believe, is only $3 from Dollar Tree. So, just accessorize. Have fun with it. This doesn’t necessarily even have to be used outdoors. This would be a great indoor hack, too. Now, these may only be $1.99 trash cans, but if you grab two of them, flip them upside down onto each other, add some of that construction double-sided adhesive that we’ve been using throughout this video that I’ll link down below for you. You need it. Craft room, toolbox, junk drawer, garage, all the places. It comes in handy so so often. We’re just going to add a couple strips to this to the bottom side of this trash can. Put the other one right side up on top of it. Push it together. These things are so strong. It’s not gonna come back apart. Add your plants in there. And we’ve just turned a $1.99 trash can into a $4 substantial and really nice looking planter. [Music] If you found this video helpful, hit that thumbs up button and share it with someone who could use this type of inspiration for their home, too. And I’ll have more IKEA inspirational videos popping up on your screen. Go ahead, click which one is your favorite. Head on over and I’ll see you there. Make sure to subscribe so you can come back for next week’s video. And I want to thank you all so so much for watching today. I will see you in the next one. Have a creative day.

  1. You share the best hacks. I need those hanger things for my siding. I didn’t know they existed. Your porch looks neat and put together. It looks great.

  2. The plants in those trash cans are cute, but they'd be top-heavy, and with the winds we get here, they'd blow over all the time.

  3. Great ideas, Shannon! Your porch is so cute and it helps me be inspired to get my patio spruced up after the winter doldrums. TFS! 🌻

  4. The back porch looks great. I really enjoyed all the hacks in this video. But, I super enjoyed seeing Honey helping you. She is obviously a professional craftspup and able to keep projects moving forward while minimizing costs. You really lucked out when she adopted your family.

  5. What a great idea, taking those $1.99 trash cans and turning them into pedestal planters! Honey always steals the show, she got so big.

  7. I watch to see Honey but it's great to see her mom tool 😂😂😂. Such great ideas. We have a couple old IKEA dressers and I'm brainstorming to figure out how to 'remodel' them to use them for back deck or garage storage. Love your videos and subscribed but I don't get the 'bell' to tap for notifications!? 🤔😡😉

  8. what great ideas. im going to try the mat for frony porch. never thought of dressing it up like you did. thanks

  9. Love your porch ideas of functional and pretty! I came across the Akerbar greenhouse at a thrift store and thought I could put artificial plants in it using those tin buckets. Thanks for the idea! Also, instead of using jute to hang the bar, you could use shower curtain hooks that close. Hey, I enjoy watching your videos. I think you said you’re in the STL area, unless it’s a different diyer. I am too! Hopefully, we’ll run into each other sometime!

  10. As far as I’m concerned, anyone who loves animals the way you love honey walks on water. You’re so good with her and she’s such a sweet sweet dog. I know I thank God every day maybe several times a day for my two little Chihuahuas to still be here with me.
