we are beginning with this video a series on growing herbs in pots over the last almost 20 years we have grown herbs in pots probably 2 to 3,000 plantings and so we believe we know a little bit about what it takes to grow handsome herbs in pots today’s herb verb that we are going to talk about is hup and also its cousin Anis hup the word hup is an amalgamation of a Greek word and a Hebrew word and it means holy herb hiip has been used for many purposes for thousands and thousands of years but today its strongest medicinal application is that when you make a tea from the leaves of the anes isip or the hiip plant what you will get is a tea that can help sore throats now this plant often gets confused because there are two different hups this plant on my left is Anis and what that means is that the leaves have a strong Anis flavor this plant on my right is hsip and it does not possess the same strength the same fragrance and taste of anus that its cousin produces one of the nice things about the hsip plants besides the fact that obviously from an ornamental perspective they’re lovely is that they aren’t susceptible to many insect pests so they’re really easy to grow all you need is an 8 in this pot’s 8 in in diameter or a 10 in this is 10 in in diameter and a deep pot this is a good 12 to 13 in deep this is a good 10 to 12 in deep then you need to fill the pot with our recommended soil recipe which you can observe if you watch our YouTube video on soil for container growing and then you plant and remember we’re a seed company so we like to sell you seeds but in the case of these herbs we recommend that you buy a single herb plant and put it in a pot either this size or this size this plant is one plant in this pot this is one plant in this pot so all you need is a single plant purchased from your local Garden Center or nursery and you can grow an abundance of hup or Anis hup hisa plants are very vigorous they can be grown outdoors in hardiness zones four to hardiness zones nine they do very well in all of those hardiness zones if they are in pots you may want to do some mulching but not necessarily what you do with these plants is you put them in their containers outside after the danger of frost is gone and about every two weeks you want to fertilize and we recommend this fertilizer Garden tone by espoma now don’t fret if you happen to forget and it goes three weeks or even four weeks herbs don’t need a lot of fertilizing but if you do fertilize you’ll get plants that look as healthy and beautiful as these two plants are you want to keep the soil just slightly moist almost a little bit on the dry side but not totally dry so if you’re having a drought it’s going to require maybe a once a week watering aside from that and the fertilizing with this fertilizer that’s all you need to do throughout the summer once you’ve experienced a frost what I would do is cut the plant all the way back so that there’s just sticks looming in your H in each case and then let if they’re outside let the skies water the plant throughout the entire winter in the spring put some of that Garden tone on the plants and then every two to three weeks continue to fertilize with Garden tone it may take a little while for them to come out of their dorcy but they will and they will flourish there is no need to repot either of these plants once the new year starts hup Anis hup and the hup plant itself are marvelous ornamentals they can actually go and be an asset in a flower garden this particular plant could grow to 3 to four feet with a spread of probably 3 feet so they can get quite large but perhaps this this plant the hisa plant itself does isn’t quite the presence but it has these stunningly blue florettes on the Little Flower spikes and they attract eye quite effectively if you look at the Anis hisop these flower spikes are very interesting the blue is more Periwinkle blue and there’s many more flower spikes the best thing about the hiips though is that they are what I would call Super pollinators they attract attract bees and butterflies and hummingbirds like you can’t believe as a matter of fact I thought for sure we’d have a couple of bees fly especially to the Anis hop during the course of this video there’s always bees and less frequently butterflies and less frequently hummingbirds on both of these plants so if you’re considering building a pollinator Garden if you’re considering combating sore throats with um herbal medicines one of these two plants or both I would counsel you as a must for your garden if you have enjoyed this video please come to our website www.h harvesting dt.com where you can purchase heirloom non GMO vegetables flowers and herbs please like subscribe and share with your friends our channel on the left side of your screen there is our most recent video and on the right side of your screen is one of our playlists we are harvesting history seeding the future
